Rules for preparing cocktails with coffee-flavored liqueur
There are not so many of them, despite the obvious simplicity of execution.
Coffee shouldn’t absolutely dominate a cocktail, but there’s no point in hiding it behind other ingredients. If you know how to brew natural coffee well, any cocktail that includes it should be prepared this way. The coffee aroma is quite strong and goes well with the creamy taste.
A couple of these liqueurs are a lifesaver in case the preferences of the gathered company are unknown. While creamy liqueur often complements the taste of brewed coffee, coffee drinks go well with cream and milkshakes.
How to distinguish real Kahlua liqueur from a fake?
Since Kahlua liqueur is considered one of the most popular in the world, they are constantly trying to counterfeit it, passing off counterfeit goods as real Kahlua.
By what signs can you distinguish an original from a fake?
- The original alcoholic product has a security seal located on the front of the bottle. The seal is held by a ribbon that is attached to the cork. If the seal on the bottle is missing or damaged, you are holding a counterfeit product in your hands.
- The classic coffee liqueur is bottled in unusually shaped bottles made of dark glass. There is an inscription on the side of the bottle in raised letters. On the reverse side is the brand's coat of arms.
- There should be no spelling errors on the label of the original product, no glue smudges or blurry printing anywhere.
- The brand name is printed on the top of the lid.
- A tax stamp is affixed to the original drink. The exception is Kahlua, purchased in Duty Free stores.
Mexican Kahlua is one of the most popular coffee liqueurs, which can be consumed as a stand-alone product or in combination with various drinks. Be sure to try natural coffee with a spoonful of liqueur; you will be surprised how much the taste of coffee will change for the better. In cocktails, Kahlua reveals its flavor characteristics, which is why it is often added to various alcoholic shakes. You can also prepare an analogue of Mexican liqueur at home. If you follow all the recommendations, the taste will be very similar to the original Kahlua.
Popular recipes for alcoholic drinks based on liqueur and coffee
There are dozens of them, so choosing the most popular ones, believe me, is not easy. As a reasonable compromise, we suggest taking a pair of beautiful, simple and original compositions.
Simple coffee and vodka cocktail
Everything is brilliant, brilliant in its own way. The simplest compositions sometimes turn out to be much tastier than exquisite cocktails. Let's start our cocktail panorama with the most primitive thing that can be made from homemade or factory-made liqueur.
What to cook from:
- 30 ml chilled vodka;
- ice;
- 3-4 drops of lemon juice;
- coffee liqueur – 60 ml.
How to cook:
- It is optimal to not only cool the vodka, but literally freeze it. Keep the bottle in the freezer for several hours before using.
- There is no need to do this with liqueur; on the contrary, it is recommended to leave it in a warm room, at a temperature of about +25°C.
- Ice for preparing a cocktail is crushed; if the smallest fragments get into the glass, it’s not a problem, although we will try to catch them with a sieve.
- Mix the cocktail in a shaker, starting with a handful of crushed ice, then pouring in the liquid ingredients in any order.
- Shake the shaker well and let the alcoholic ingredients mix well. Open the strainer, pour the cocktail through it into a glass.
Strainer and shaker are not familiar concepts to everyone. The first is simply a convenient sieve, which is used to prevent large particles (ice, berries, spices) from getting into the glass. The second is an oblong metal container with a tight lid, in which cocktails are whipped.
Note! If you don’t have such wonderful items in your household, there’s no reason to refuse a cocktail. Start small, let a small strainer (for example, a tea strainer) serve as a strainer, and a plastic bottle of dairy products with a lid and a fairly wide neck can act as an improvised shaker.
Chocolate and coffee passion
The original title omits mention of coffee, which we personally consider completely unacceptable. It is the coffee component that gives the entire composition a voluminous, invigorating taste, although there won’t be much of it in the glass.
What to cook from:
- Coffee with liqueur - new flavors of a familiar drink
- serving of hot chocolate – 250 ml (chilled);
- the yolk of one selected egg;
- crushed ice;
- 50 ml VSOP cognac;
- a spoon of grated chocolate;
- thick coffee liqueur – 50 ml;
- whipped cream - for decoration.
How to cook:
- Don't bother with hot chocolate, grating it into shavings and dissolving the bars in boiling water. Moreover, we won’t bother making it from cocoa powder. For a cocktail, it is more than enough to buy a ready-made powder composition.
- Brew hot chocolate strictly according to the manufacturer's instructions and allow to cool slowly. Just in case, filter the prepared drink into a small glass jar and put it in the common compartment of the refrigerator for an hour.
- Before preparing the mixture, cool and whip heavy, preferably 35 percent, cream. The mixture is prepared just before making the cocktail using a high-speed mixer.
- Moving on to mixing, the egg is thoroughly washed with soap, dried and the shell is broken. The white is separated and set aside, only the yolk is sent to the shaker. Add ice and all drinks there, in portions according to the list.
- The shaker is not shaken too vigorously; there is no need for fine ice chips in the cocktail. Pour the drink into a cocktail glass and top with cream. It is acceptable to use the mixture from an aerosol can, but be sure to make sure that it does not fall off when it comes into contact with ice.
Note! In addition to saving time, it is logical to brew hot chocolate from a ready-made powder concentrate for this reason. Often such drinks contain additional flavorings - nutty, creamy, liqueur (!). Choose according to your taste, any type of hot chocolate is suitable for our purposes, but cocktails based on them will come out with different flavor notes.
B-52
This cocktail includes even the most modest bar in its menu. Indeed, there is hardly a more famous composition! There is no need to mix it, you just need to have the recommended ingredients.
What to cook from:
- 50 ml coffee liqueur (Kahlua or homemade);
- Baileys “Irish Cream” – 50 ml;
- Cointreau or other orange liqueur – 50 ml.
How to cook:
- The whole trick of layering cocktails using the technique of pouring liquids. The classic is to use a knife, placing it flat on the edge of the glass and resting the tip from the inside against the wall. The angle should be about 30°, although you can experiment. Drinks are poured one at a time onto the flat side of the blade.
- Is the theory clear? Let's get started. All components are collected in the same quantity, preferably using different measurements. The coffee drink is poured first. The knife is removed, the blade is wiped and returned to its original position. Creamy Baileys is added into the glass next, and orange liqueur is poured in last.
- The cocktail is served with a straw, despite the fact that the container is quite shallow. The fact is that it is customary to set the top layer on fire, although it is often argued that this is not a historical, but a newfangled tradition.
Homemade liqueurs in B-52 will give a head start to signature drinks. The fact is that it looks prettier if it is made from opaque liqueurs. Thick homemade liqueur made from coffee beans is not inferior to the branded Kahlua.
Coffee Jamaica
A simple, invigorating drink, of course, if you do not increase the portions beyond a reasonable limit.
Ingredients:
- several ice cubes;
- 30 ml light rum;
- 40 ml strong coffee (chilled, instant);
- coffee liqueur – 50 ml;
- 20 ml cream.
How to cook:
- Ice is immediately placed in a glass, the remaining ingredients are poured into a shaker or another container for mixing is chosen.
- Mix the ingredients with a spoon, place a straw in the serving glass and pour in the cocktail.
As long as you don't change the ratio of coffee to alcohol, cocktails with coffee liqueur really perk you up. If you don’t get drunk easily from strong alcohol, you can repeat the portion, it is not so large. But be careful and think before you order it for the third time, maybe you should take a break or switch to other drinks.
- 5 recipes for chocolate liqueur. Love is chocolate.
Cocktail "Aztec"
The composition is often classified as youthful, both due to its lightness and due to the low price of the cocktail.
Ingredients:
- chilled milk, 3 percent – 80 ml;
- 40 g milk chocolate, plus shavings for decoration;
- 30 ml coffee liqueur.
How to cook:
- The chocolate is melted using a water bath or microwave oven. Pour into the bottom of a conical cocktail glass.
- Separately, beat milk and sweet liqueur using a shaker. The finished mixture is poured into a glass and a small spoon is served with the cocktail.
You may actually need a spoon, since in a classic cocktail the chocolate thickens quite quickly. When heating the chocolate, you can add milk to it (a separate portion) to prevent the ingredient from hardening.
"Apache"
The name of the composition was given by another Indian tribe, and in appearance it is somewhat similar to the B-52 cocktail. The drink is also made in layers, albeit from other ingredients. Another difference is that the cocktail is not set on fire.
Ingredients:
- 45 ml Kahlua or other coffee liqueur;
- 45 ml creamy Baileys;
- 45 ml Midori – emerald melon liqueur.
How to cook:
- Professional bartenders manage to create cocktails using layers of drinks at different temperatures. In the absence of such experience, the bottles should be kept in the cold for about an hour.
- The glass for the cocktail is chosen to be tall and rather narrow, and the drinks are “stacked” in it in layers. The bottom one will be coffee, and melon liqueur is poured on top of it. The final layer is Baileys.
The portion is too big to empty the glass in one gulp. The cocktail can also be made from half of the indicated ingredients, then you really have to drink it in one fell swoop to the bottom - this is the condition for its use.
Layered Sheridance with sambuca and whiskey
This cocktail has a short name, “Tornado”. The drink looks very nice and tastes great.
- 3 coffee liqueur recipes for beginners and experts
Drink composition:
- sambuca – 30 ml;
- whiskey (any) – 30 ml;
- absinthe – 30 ml;
- “Sheridans” – 30 ml each of white and black.
How to cook:
- We use a glass in which Martini cocktails are traditionally mixed, that is, a conical bowl with a high thin stem. Clamping the hole with the creamy drink, pour a portion of Sheridance coffee into the bottom.
- Next layers are whiskey, sambuca and absinthe. Each of them is carefully poured onto a spoon (knife), placing one on top of the other. The last one is cream liqueur, the quantity can be increased slightly.
A replacement for Sheridans are homemade liqueurs made with condensed milk and coffee; as a rule, they hold up even better in a “layered” arrangement.
Sheridan: drink correctly
Sheridance is a dessert liqueur served in clear liqueur glasses. Cookies, ice cream, chocolate or pastries are suitable as a snack.
Cooking methods:
Classic method: liqueur is poured in layers
The most important thing is that you get layers
How to do it:
- Place the glass at an angle of 45°.
- We bring the neck of the open bottle to the glass, so that the “dark” part is on top.
- Fill the glass 90% in a thin stream along the wall. After this, we level the glass. We drink in one gulp.
You can use a straw: in this case, you need to start drinking from the bottom layer.
Another way is to pour and shake the layers well. Then we drink in small savory sips. Ice cream or sweets are suitable as a snack.
The combination of Sheridan with coffee and hot chocolate will be interesting and tasty.
You just need to add one or two teaspoons of liqueur to the mug.
Important point: Liqueur should not be mixed with citrus juices, carbonated drinks and mineral water.
Despite the fact that Sheridance is good and by itself it goes well with vodka, gin and sambuca. As a result, several outstanding cocktail recipes have been created that have gained mass recognition.
"Slight Storm"
Pour into a cocktail glass:
- Chocolate-coffee portion of liqueur (25 ml.),
- Sambuca (25 ml.),
- Then the creamy vanilla part (25 ml.),
- Vodka (25 ml.).
- Whipped cream (10 ml) on top.
"Creamy Paradise"
- Sheridan's (100ml.),
- Milk 3.5% (120 ml.),
- Gin (30 ml.) with 3-4 pieces of ice in a shaker.
Pour into a glass. Decorate with a pineapple slice, cherry or mint.
- Sheridan's liqueur layers (30 ml.),
- Sprinkle with grated chocolate (20 ml).
We wait a couple of minutes until the creamy layer absorbs the chocolate. We drink in one gulp.

Initially, Kahlua liqueur was produced with a low strength, about 24%. Over time, bars and restaurants began increasingly ordering shakes with aromatic coffee liqueur, and Kahlua's popularity began to grow. In addition, confectioners began to soak sponge cake layers and pastries with liqueur. All this contributed to the decision to reduce the strength of Kahlua by 4%.
Currently, Kahlua is produced in different strengths: from 20% to 36%. In some drinking establishments, bartenders offer shakes that are made exclusively from the strongest types of Kahlua.
Kahlua drink has a rich coffee aroma. In the manufacturing process, a special variety of coffee beans is used - Arabica, which are kept for some time away from sunlight for final ripening. This allows you to reveal the rich, subtle taste of each coffee bean.

- Liqueur plays the role of a sweet ingredient in conjunction with the other components of the cocktail.
- Coffee alcohol is the main ingredient to which other drinks are added.
The first type of cocktail can be served as an aperitif, the second type is served after a meal, like a classic digestif.
