Connoisseurs drink coffee drinks all the time. It doesn’t stop them if they don’t have special utensils to prepare their favorite delicacy. They know how to brew coffee without Turkish coffee using improvised methods. Coffee lovers follow simple rules and use utensils that are found in every kitchen. The result is aromatic coffee with a rich flavor that is not inferior to a traditional Turkish drink.
How to properly brew coffee without a Turk?
To make your coffee drink as thick and aromatic as Turkish coffee, you should follow simple rules :
- Choose the correct grind level . Fine and ultra-fine grinding is only suitable for Turkish grinding. When using other cooking methods, preference should be given to medium grinding.
- Use bottled or filtered water . A coffee drink prepared with hard tap water will be tasteless and unflavoured.
- Do not boil or brew with boiling water . Coffee does not tolerate high temperatures - when it boils, it loses not only its taste, but also its benefits. The optimal water temperature is 91-96°C, which corresponds to the temperature of boiling water that has cooled for 1-2 minutes.
- Choose the narrowest pan, cup or ladle . To prevent it from losing its aroma during the preparation process, the area of contact between coffee and air should be minimal.
- Remove extraneous odors from dishes . Before brewing, you need to boil water in a container or pour boiling water over the container. Preference should be given to enamel cookware - enamel practically does not accumulate odors from previously prepared food.
- Use dishes with thick walls and bottom . Thick-walled containers retain heat longer and brew better.
The best coffee for making a drink is freshly ground .
If it is not possible to purchase whole grains and grind them before brewing, you can buy ground in packs. Preference should be given to grains packed in vacuum briquettes - in such packaging the product is protected from exposure to oxygen and sunlight, and can be stored without loss of quality for up to 18 months. After opening the package, the ground powder should be stored in a tightly sealed glass jar .
Important! It is also necessary to monitor the shelf life of the product - over time, coffee “fizzles out”, old raw materials turn out to be sour and not at all aromatic.
Brewing coffee using a thermos or thermal cup
This is a completely accelerated brewing method, and the coffee is brewed aromatic, because vapors are not allowed to escape, and every drop of oil comes out in a concentrated form. Therefore, coffee is added in smaller quantities, and brewing proceeds faster.
When using a thermos, a wide-necked version is more suitable so that the grounds do not clog the dishes.
Thermos makes it possible to add richness and aroma to coffee due to such properties as tightness. The thermos must first be doused with boiling water. In a closed space, rapid extraction occurs. Because of this, a smaller proportion is required here: a teaspoon of coffee per 200 milliliters of water. Let the drink breathe for a minute and close the thermos. After 4 minutes, a fragrant drink will appear.
The thermal cup must be rinsed with boiling water to get rid of foreign odors. Any dish like this will work. To avoid overfilling the coffee and grounds when drinking by tilting the cup, it is better to unscrew the lid and drink from an open container.
- Pour a spoonful of coffee powder into a thermal cup, and a 250 ml spoon into a thermos.
- Pour boiling water over without topping up.
- Stand with the lid open
- Close the lid, then open after 3 minutes or more.
- It is better to pour coffee from a thermal cup or thermos and drink from another container.
In a cup
Brewing in a bowl is one of the simplest cooking methods that does not require the use of specialized equipment .
How to cook:
- Pour boiling water over the ceramic bowl and wipe dry.
- Add 2 teaspoons of crushed product.
- Pour 200 ml of hot water over the raw material and cover the cup with a saucer. You can brew it together with sugar - this way the grounds will settle to the bottom faster.
- After 4-5 minutes the drink is ready to drink.
In order for foam to form on the surface of the drink, the contents of the cup must not be stirred during brewing .
This method of brewing is inconvenient because the coffee grounds remain at the bottom of the bowl, and the drink cannot be mixed, for example, with milk or liqueur . To avoid this, you can use a special paper filter in the form of a funnel.
It is placed in a cup, poured into a coffee filter and filled with hot water. After brewing, the funnel is removed along with the grounds, and a clean drink without sediment remains in the bowl.
By the way! If there is no filter, the coffee brewed in a cup can be strained through a strainer.
Cooking technique
Freshly ground coffee is the most aromatic. In fact, the brewing technology will not be complicated.
- First of all, the coffee beans are roasted and ground. Along with whole fruits of the coffee tree, already ground product is used, depending on the preferences of the cook.
- For cooking, use clay or ceramic dishes. It will preserve the properties of ground beans and maintain the temperature of the drink for a long time.
- The container is heated, and then coffee powder is poured into it. They cook the same amount as when using Turks. Do not wait until it boils, otherwise the drink will have an unpleasant aftertaste.
- During the cooking process, you can add cinnamon or cognac to taste.
- The coffee is then poured into a warmed cup. At this stage, you can add sugar, vanilla, milk, as well as cream and condensed milk. If you add these ingredients earlier, the drink will be spoiled.
On a note! To form foam, pour the coffee, holding the container 1-3 centimeters above the edge of the mug.
In a saucepan
When you need to treat several people at once, you can brew coffee in a saucepan.
How to cook:
- Pour the required amount of product into the pan at the rate of 2 tsp. for 200 ml of water. Add sugar if desired.
- Pour cold water into the pan.
- Place the container on low heat.
- As soon as a thick foam forms on the surface of the drink, remove the container from the stove.
- Let the drink brew under the lid for 3-5 minutes, then you can pour the treat into cups.
To make your drink more aromatic and thick, you can use the double heating method .
As soon as a thick foam forms on the surface of the drink, the pan should be quickly removed from the heat. When the foam has settled, the container is returned to the stove and reheated until a new layer of foam forms .
Attention! If you need to prepare a drink quickly, the raw materials can be filled with pre-boiled hot water.
Tips for making coffee
We don’t know which option of how to brew coffee without a Turk at home (on the stove, in a cup or microwave) you chose. But we can give some advice on how to bring this process to the maximum possible perfection under the current conditions:
- Use good cookware. If it's a saucepan, take one that's made of stainless steel; if it's a mug, take one made of ceramic. Poor raw materials will negatively affect the taste of the drink, since during the heating process it will begin to interact with ground coffee beans
- Always grind just enough coffee. how much is needed to prepare one serving. Do not try to cook half a pack at once, you will only spoil the product
- Remember that the taste of coffee prepared using one of the methods suggested above will be significantly different from what you are used to. Take it for granted and don’t try to make it perfect
There is nothing terrible or catastrophic in the absence of a cezve at hand - millions of people daily manage the preparation of their morning drink without its help. Take advantage of their experience, life experiences and do the same if you can’t get to Turkey right now, but you really want to drink coffee. With a few minor shortcomings, you will end up with a wonderful drink, the invigorating qualities of which will not go away - after all, it is still the same coffee, just prepared in the most alternative of all available options!
In the microwave
Brewing coffee in the microwave is the most unusual way to prepare this drink.
How to cook:
- Pour boiling water over a ceramic bowl or heat it in the microwave. To brew coffee in a microwave oven, it is recommended to select a container with a volume of at least 300 ml and fill it 2/3 so that the rising foam does not escape from the container.
- Pour 2-3 tbsp into a dry, warm cup. l. ground coffee.
- Fill the raw material with cold water and place the container in the microwave.
- Start the appliance and carefully monitor the condition of the drink: as soon as foam rises in the bowl, turn off the microwave immediately .
- Let the drink brew inside the oven for 1 minute and remove using a potholder.
Depending on the power of the device, it takes an average of 2-4 minutes to prepare a treat .
During preparation, you must monitor the state of the drink very carefully and not leave the stove for a second: coffee can boil and escape from the cup at any moment .
Microwave dishes should not be placed on a cold or wet surface, otherwise the cup may break due to temperature changes.
A microwave allows you to get a ready-made drink in the shortest possible time, but coffee from a microwave oven does not have outstanding taste or rich aroma .
How to cold brew coffee in a glass jar
You can also make coffee using the cold brew method. This method also has its fans. Using this method, you can stock up on coffee for a couple of days in advance.
- You will need a jar with a lid, water and coffee powder. You need a coarse grind, the ratio of ingredients is 1 to 5.
- Pour water over the coffee until the powder is completely covered. Let the coffee stand for half a minute and add water to the top of the container. Stir and close the jar with a lid.
- The jar is placed in the refrigerator for a day (the strength of the coffee depends on the holding time).
- Filter the finished coffee and pour it into another container. This coffee will keep for a week in the refrigerator.
- To consume the finished drink, you need to pour the required amount of coffee from a can and dilute it with hot water.
How to cook properly
Aromatic coffee can be obtained using freshly ground beans. To prevent the taste of coffee from becoming bitter, the coffee is poured immediately.
Both cold and hot water are used to brew coffee. Cold water gives a rich drink, while hot water gives the softest and most delicate drink. It is recommended to add a small amount of butter to the coffee during brewing. This additive also gives the drink delicate properties.
Lovers of unusual tastes often experiment using various spices and herbs. Cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg and even peppercorns are added. Strong coffee is brewed three times.
To make the coffee grounds settle faster, you can add a little cold water and wait a couple of seconds.
In the French press
A French press is a convenient device for obtaining an invigorating drink without grounds . Depending on the volume of the French press, you can brew one or several servings of treats at once.
How to cook:
- Boil water, let the boiling water cool for 2-3 minutes.
- Pour ground coffee into the flask at the rate of 2-3 tsp. without a slide for 200 ml of water.
- Pour the raw material with a small amount of water, mix thoroughly and pour in the remaining water.
- Close the container with the lid without lowering the piston.
- Let the drink brew for 4-5 minutes.
- Lower the plunger and pour the finished coffee into cups.
Reference! If you want a drink with a slight bitterness, the infusion time should be increased to 7-8 minutes.
To make coffee, you should choose a French press with a glass flask and metal parts . When plastic elements come into contact with hot water, they release toxic substances and give an unpleasant taste.
Alternatives to Turk
Why is this exotic vessel, invented centuries ago, still considered ideal for making coffee? The reason is the shape and material. The cezve has a wide bottom and narrows at the top. This design does not allow the water to boil before lush foam appears. All bubbles accumulate in the narrow upper part. In addition, a wide neck would release most of the essential oils during cooking, and therefore the taste and aroma.
The material is selected based on two main criteria: optimal thermal conductivity and the absence of harmful chemical reactions with grain components. Let’s remember what cezves are made of, and alternatives will immediately emerge. The main materials are copper, ceramics, aluminum, stainless steel, clay. That is, you can replace the coffee pot with any homemade vessel made of similar material.
- This is interesting: What is the difference between a Turk and a cezve?
If there are options, it is better not to use aluminum and stainless steel for cooking. The first slightly changes the taste of coffee by releasing vapors. The second heats up unevenly and the contents may burn.
What remains is copper, ceramics and clay. In any kitchen there is a small-diameter dishware made from at least one material. If you happen to have a silver mug hidden in your closet, use only it! The highest quality and most expensive “coffee makers” are silver.
Grandmother's secrets and one small cup
You've probably heard about the recipes we outlined above. However, you can brew ground coffee in another way. My grandmother shared this recipe with me. And now I want to share with you how to properly brew coffee using a cup.
Utensils for preparing an invigorating drink are very important. So, when brewing coffee in a cup, you need to use a good ceramic container. Do not use glass glasses.
Let's take a closer look at how to brew coffee in a regular cup. First, you should familiarize yourself with the list of ingredients. Just like in previous recipes, we will need ground coffee and clean water. It is necessary to warm up the cup before brewing our invigorating drink in it. This can be done using boiling water or in a water bath. This must be done, since in this case the heat of the drink will not be used to heat the mug. Next, take ground coffee for brewing in a cup and pour it into our heated container. Pour boiling water over the powder and cover with a saucer or lid. This must be done in order for our drink to infuse properly. This usually happens within 2-5 minutes. When you open the lid, you will see that the grounds have sunk to the bottom. This means that our drink is ready. You can add cinnamon, brown sugar, chocolate syrup or milk to the cup.

In this case, it is best to choose another dish, but when cooking, be sure to strictly adhere to the recipe. In this article I will tell you how to properly brew ground coffee at home if you don’t have a coffee maker.

In Turkish
Making ground coffee in a Turk is the most common way for many lovers of an invigorating drink.
For preparation we will need:
- Filtered water – 125ml;
- Ground coffee beans – 25g
But how to brew this coffee correctly? To do this, take a Turk, pour water into it and add ground grains. Place the container on the stove. We wait for the moment when the foam begins to rise to the neck of the Turk, then remove it from the stove. Let it cool for 30 seconds, then return it back. These steps should be repeated three times. The last time, removing the drink from the stove, leave it for two minutes. During this time, the coffee grounds will completely settle. After which you can pour the drink into cups to enjoy its taste and aroma. Surely many people want to know exactly how long to brew this coffee. This will of course depend on the operation of your stove and the volume of liquid. But on average it takes 10-15 minutes.
Method two: for those who don’t like grains in their drink
We will send the most capricious coffee grounds deniers to the instant option, and for those who still prefer natural grain, I will suggest using the well-known French press. By the way, the Latin American method of cooking is also based on the use of this device (according to the stories of a friend who came from the Dominican Republic).
Interesting. The design of the French press was invented by the French in the 19th century. Initially, their model did not have a filter, and the coffee was simply mixed with water. The Italians could not stay away from this convenient device and came up with a filter for the press. But the French did not give up and at the third stage of the struggle for ownership of the invention they defeated the Italians. They created a modern design like a teapot, giving it the name “French press.”
It probably never occurred to the creators of the French press that they would use it to brew tea somewhere. In Russia, everything is possible and there is nothing to be surprised about, and it’s so convenient - the tea leaves remain under the filter, and a clear drink pours into the cup. I can imagine the faces of the Chinese contemplating how their national treasure - elite tea - was crushed by a European press!
On a note. For those who use a French press to brew tea, even if not the best expensive varieties, I want to say that this is wrong. Firstly, the structure of the tea leaves breaks down, i.e. tea leaves, which negatively affects the taste of the drink. Secondly, contact of the metal parts of the press with the tea infusion is extremely undesirable, again due to the loss of its quality. If time is valuable, brew a pyramid of natural tea.
But it’s been five years since the inventors of tea from the Middle Kingdom have had any reason to be offended by us. Russians began to use French presses for brewing coffee, and quickly realized that they should not use plastic models if they want to get a high-quality drink without extraneous aromas.
How to brew coffee in a French press
The principle is similar to the first description:
- boil water;
- pour ground coffee into the flask depending on its volume and the desired amount of drink. The proportions are the same, per 150 ml – 1 – 2 teaspoons of product;
- NOTE: Coffee requires medium to coarse grind. Grains that are too small will pass through the filter sieve;
- pour boiling water into the flask, stir after 30–60 seconds;
- We put on the rod with the press and carefully lower it to the bottom. If the flask is full, be very careful, the hot drink may splash out and burn your hands.
Pour the finished filtered coffee into cups immediately. It will not be as thick and dense as in the first method, but quite tasty and rich.
Method three: just add water to the saucepan
Don’t expect a delicious aroma and excellent taste from coffee from a saucepan, but you can count on a good Americano. In dishes with a wide neck, which is the same in diameter as or slightly smaller than the bottom, the aromatic components will quickly evaporate, and only a small part of them will reach the cup.
Do not use a ladle, saucepan or pan made of aluminum without an enamel coating. Contact with metal will deteriorate the taste and destroy the beneficial components of the drink. Depending on the number of people who are going to take part in coffee drinking, select a container and prepare the necessary ground coffee. Its grinding should be medium or fine. Expect to put 1 – 2 teaspoons per 100 – 150 ml of water, which should be clean and fresh.
The preparation process is similar to brewing coffee in a Turk:
- pour coffee into the pan, add sugar if required. Its quantity should be the same as coffee, preferably less;
- fill with cold water and put on fire;
- you can cover it with a lid, the process will go faster, but don’t miss the moment when the foam begins to rise;
- When foam appears, immediately remove the pan from the stove. Let the nascent “volcano” settle and repeat the heating process until foam appears again. This way you will achieve a high strength of the drink;
- leave the saucepan for 2 - 3 minutes to allow the grounds to settle, and pour the contents into cups.
This coffee is good with cream or milk, pastries, and sweet desserts.
Method four: if you have a thermos
A thermos will be very helpful at home for making good coffee. Before brewing, rinse the flask with boiling water to warm it up. Then pour in 10 teaspoons of ground coffee, if the capacity of the container is 1 liter, pour boiling water and close the lid. In 10 minutes you will receive a fragrant, thick drink. Pour it carefully so as not to pour coffee sediment into the cup or pour the infusion through a strainer.
A large-volume thermos will help in a situation with an invasion of guests. To avoid standing at the stove with a Turk, brew coffee in a thermal vessel. This preparation is also useful for coffee cocktails. The cooled drink will become the basis for a chic ice cream.
Method five: if you have a microwave
Everyone is accustomed to this miracle of household appliances; there is a microwave oven in almost every kitchen. If you act correctly and carefully monitor the process, you can prepare a delicious, rich coffee in the microwave in 2–3 minutes. Moreover, several servings at the same time, but in reasonable quantities. When there are 2 - 3 cups, it is easy to monitor the preparation, but if there are more, difficulties will arise.
The best type of cookware would be a transparent cup; the progress of cooking can be seen through the glass and you can control it. Prepare 2 teaspoons of coffee for 200 ml of clean water. Cooking steps:
- take the required number of cups and pour finely ground coffee into them, add sugar;
- Pour water, filling the cup 2/3 full. If desired, some of the water can be replaced with milk;
- place the dishes in the oven and select maximum power;
- turn it on, carefully monitor what is happening;
- If you notice the foam rising, turn off the stove or simply open the door. When the foam settles, repeat the process. The action can be repeated a third time, increasing the strength of the drink.
If you don't like the grains, pour into another cup through a strainer. Be careful not to get burned by the hot liquid.
Here are 5 alternative ways to prepare your favorite drink without a coffee machine, coffee maker, or even a Turkish coffee pot. A true coffee lover will find a way to make good, fresh coffee for himself, friends and family. It will undoubtedly be better than water with instant coffee mixed in it.
