Coffee with ice cream: name, how to prepare at home

What is the correct name?

What do you call coffee that has ice cream in it? An invigorating drink with a cool dessert is called iced coffee. The word “glace” translated from French means “frozen”, “icy”. According to one version, France is considered the birthplace of the coffee cocktail. It was the French baristas, trying to combine different tastes, who came up with the unusual glace drink, which guests of cafes and bars immediately liked.

According to another version, iced coffee was invented in Austria. There is a legend according to which a young man went into a cafe to drink coffee with milk. But the bartender had just run out of milk, and he decided to add some ice cream to the Americano. The bartender hoped that the ice cream would quickly melt in the hot liquid and taste like cream. However, the guest was in a hurry and could not wait, so the barista served him a drink with unmelted ice cream. The visitor really liked the cooling dessert combined with hot coffee. It must be said that the guest turned out to be a major businessman, and subsequently patented the glace recipe and told influential acquaintances and friends about it.

In different countries, cooling coffee may be called differently:

  • The Italian dessert Affogato is popular in America and some European countries. Strong espresso is topped with a scoop of ice cream, often a sundae. The sweet dish is eaten with a spoon, because after the ice cream melts, a dense foam forms on the surface.
  • Eiskaffee is a German drink made from condensed milk, coffee and ice cream.
  • Glace is the familiar name for a coffee and milk drink. It can be served hot or chilled, with the addition of various components: chocolate, syrup, caramel, spices, alcohol, etc.

You can prepare the glace at home yourself. To do this, you will need a shot of espresso or Americano and a scoop of your favorite ice cream. The cooling drink is also offered in almost all catering establishments: bars, restaurants, coffee shops, McDonald's.

It is still not known whether the name of a coffee cocktail with ice cream is spelled correctly - glace or glace. Both options are allowed, although preference is given to the first way of writing.

Pros and cons of iced coffee

Pros:

  • Refreshing in hot weather;
  • Allows you to save calories on dessert;
  • Delicious, does not let you get bored;
  • Not as strong as an espresso and not as boring as an Americano;
  • Even those who don't like coffee will like it;
  • Quickly prepared at home;
  • Suitable for beginner baristas;
  • Can be prepared using inexpensive coffee;
  • Widely spread;
  • Ideal for parties;
  • Quickly turns into an alcoholic cocktail;
  • Invigorates, but does not make you a “caffeine addict.”

Preparing the drink will take just a few minutes.
There are not many downsides to the drink. If you often drink ice cream and do not deny yourself other sweets, it will turn from a low-calorie dessert into a cause of weight gain. This is especially true for “specialties” with syrups, marshmallows and creamy toppings. The more complex the dessert, the more calories, usually.

Coffee with ice cream may increase appetite if a person is insulin sensitive and eats a lot of sugar. It is not suitable for diabetics who are prone to metabolic syndrome and have problems with the heart and blood vessels. You need to be careful with it if your tooth enamel is damaged, and the drink may not be suitable for children and pregnant women.

Glace is a drink for celebration, going out, entertainment, and not part of the everyday diet.

How to make coffee with ice cream?

In the traditional version of the recipe for a coffee cocktail with ice cream, two main components are used: hot natural black coffee and cold ice cream. Lovers of sweet drinks can add sugar to the glace.

The preparation is very simple:

  1. Brew natural black coffee in any way: in a Turk, French press, coffee machine.
  2. Strain if necessary to remove the grounds.
  3. Add sugar while the liquid is still hot.
  4. Pour the drink into a tall container: a cup or glass. Place a scoop of ice cream on top and serve with a straw.

There is no need to mix the ingredients. Hot coffee with slowly melting ice cream has a special taste. Some people like their ice cream or creme brulee to completely melt and form a dense, thick foam on the surface, but most still prefer to enjoy their drink with unmelted ice cream.

The basic recipe is suitable for making a cooling coffee cocktail at home.

Coffee on top, ice cream on bottom and vice versa. The most popular combinations of coffee + ice cream

You won’t see anyone using a combination of coffee and ice cream anymore: few people didn’t buy ice cream at McDonald’s or whip it up at home: from any coffee, including instant, and any ice cream bought in a store.
We will share five of the most proven recipes that you can make at home. In the article you will find two bonus videos from our experts.

Basic ice cream coffee recipe

The simplest recipe, requiring only coffee and ice cream. To prepare, you can brew coffee in any convenient way (yes, instant coffee is also good!) and add ice cream to the cup to taste.

It is better to strain coffee brewed in a cezve or let it sit before pouring it into a cup, so that there is no grounds in the drink. If you wish, you can add sugar to this drink, but usually it turns out sweet on its own thanks to the ice cream.

In France, where glace spread throughout the world, glace is made from coffee cooled to about 10 degrees. But most people like a combination of hot and cold, so not everyone chills their coffee before serving.

Glaze with yolks

The task becomes more difficult, and the coffee becomes more refined and foamy. To create foam you will need to beat 1 yolk with 30-40 g. powdered sugar.

We prepare coffee according to your recipe, then pour the whipped yolk into it, and put a scoop of ice cream on top. By the way, you don’t have to take ice cream; this coffee goes well with chocolate.

Affogato

Affogato is not really coffee; in Italy it is classified more like a dessert and is eaten with spoons. In its simplest version, a scoop of vanilla ice cream is poured with a shot of espresso. For those who like it “hot”, there is an option with the addition of amaretto liqueur.

Ice coffee (eiskaffee)

This coffee cocktail is popular in Austria and Germany. There are many recipes for its preparation, but the basic one includes chilled coffee with vanilla ice cream. The classic German recipe is a little more interesting:

A cup of chilled Americano must be thoroughly mixed with 2 tsp. condensed milk. Place a scoop of ice cream in a glass goblet, pour coffee on top, and then garnish with a top of whipped cream.

Frappe

The favorite coffee of the whole country and the national pride of the Greeks. Frappe, strictly speaking, is not coffee with ice cream, but cold black coffee with ice, whipped to foam. In Greece, frappe is based on instant coffee, while in other countries they prefer to use espresso as a base.

50 ml. espresso or oriental coffee must be cooled to 10 degrees, beat with a mixer until foam appears. Place 4-5 ice cubes or crushed ice to taste in a tall glass, pour in coffee (in some recipes, coffee is immediately shaken with crushed ice). Place a scoop of ice cream on top and decorate with chocolate chips.

And here is a version of frappe made from instant coffee with the addition of cocoa and condensed milk:

How to serve glace?

To enjoy a cooling coffee drink, it is important to serve it correctly. An Irish glass is ideal for glace - a tall glass dish with a handle, conical in shape. You can also use regular glass glasses, but it is advisable that they be tall. The glace should be served with a dessert spoon and a cocktail straw. First, coffee is drunk through a straw, and ice cream is eaten with a spoon.

To make ice cream or creme brulee a real decoration for your drink, you can place it on the surface of the coffee using a pastry syringe. If you add other ingredients (syrup, sugar, grated chocolate), do it before squeezing the ice cream out of the syringe. If you do the opposite, you can destroy beautiful patterns.

Glace should be prepared immediately before use. If you do this in advance, the ice cream will melt and turn into foam, which not everyone likes. Ice cream or creme brulee can be placed into a cup with a regular spoon, but it is better to use a special device that produces neat, even balls. Glace is decorated with chocolate chips, sweet sprinkles, cocoa powder, nuts or served without decoration.

Instant ice cream with cinnamon

If you don’t like brewed coffee, you can use any instant variety.

Ingredients:

  • instant coffee – 1-2 teaspoons
  • vanilla ice cream - 1 - 2 tbsp. spoons
  • cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
  • sugar to taste

First, we brew coffee, as we usually do in the morning. Cool as much as time allows, add sugar and ice cream. Sprinkle ground cinnamon on top. It gives the drink a divine aroma and an unusual aftertaste.

Nutritional and energy value of the drink

Classic glass

To make real iced coffee, you need to brew coffee in a Turk. This drink needs to be cooled to about 10 degrees, placed in a cold place. Next, pour the cooled and brewed coffee into a tall glass of about 300 ml. Then add ice cream. The main thing here is to maintain the correct proportions: ice cream should be 25% of the volume of coffee. For example, if we got 300 ml, then we need to take 2 tablespoons of ice cream.

Cost of dessert in popular coffee shops

The average price for glace in Moscow cafes is about 230 rubles. Approximate cost of a soft drink in the capital’s establishments (in rubles per serving):

With cognac

As in previous recipes, in this case the espresso prepared in the Turk also needs to be allowed to cool. While brewing, coffee is seasoned with sugar. There are no clear recommendations regarding the amount of this ingredient. Sugar is added at your discretion. Already in an Irish glass, a scoop of ice cream is added to the coffee, and cognac (5 ml) is added on top. It may be that coffee with this alcohol will seem very strong to you. In this case, it is better for you to use liqueur instead of cognac. This coffee is much easier to drink. The invigorating drink will also have an original and pleasant taste.
