Cost of coffee dosages.
A small excerpt from a meeting with my girls-promoters - these are traders standing near the shelves in hypermarkets and telling customers which product (in our case, coffee) they are recommended to pause their choice on.
Typically, such “directed” sales are carried out due to professional knowledge of the issue, although some companies follow the path of simple obsession, which is why clients begin to slowly become intolerant of this category of sellers, which is important in the correct setting of the business.
Promoters are specialists who bring information and requests from the front line of the trading front to the company’s office.
At that meeting, their question of the day was: “How many cups of natural coffee is enough in a 250-gram pack compared to a 100-gram jar of instant coffee?” And how many SERVINGS are there in both cases? »
The question is a very valid one, because clients don’t really set out dosages by gram for themselves.
The answer is as follows: “Everything depends on the manufacturing method. On average, a serving of natural coffee requires 6-8 grams of ground coffee, i.e. and a 250-gram pack yields 30-40 cups of drink.
The consumption of instant is less: 2-2.5 grams per serving, and the average package has the smallest weight - 100 grams, in other words, it also yields about 40 servings.
If you look at the prices, the cost of natural coffee is around 4 bucks for 250 grams, and instant coffee is about the same for 100 grams (here we are talking about high-quality natural and instant coffee - cheap varieties are not taken into account).
In other words, for 4 bucks you can get 40 servings of natural coffee or the same 40 servings of instant coffee. But can these drinks be compared in terms of quality? »
At such moments, one question always arises in my head: “Why drink instant coffee if you can drink natural coffee for the same money. “Yes, from time to time - because of the speed of production, but in general I think - only because no one can really explain this to the client.
Yes, and be sure to ask yourself another question: why is there 7-8 grams of natural coffee per serving, and only 2 grams of instant coffee?
Perhaps this is a reflection of the difference in quality.

Briefly about grinding
Coffee is essentially a herbal infusion. To prepare a tasty drink, you need to follow three rules: choose a good grain, fry it correctly and grind it to the desired degree of grinding.
Grinding affects the taste of the liquid and the number of coffee beans that need to be put into the coffee pot or coffee machine.

Ask the barista a question
The substances that make up the grains enter the water in different ways. Fine grinding contains aromatic components that quickly disintegrate when heated. If you leave the Turk on the fire, the coffee will turn out bitter. If you remove it ahead of time, the liquid will be sour.

When is the coffee in the geyser coffee maker ready?
As soon as you hear gurgling, immediately remove the moka from the heat. This way you will preserve the pleasant chocolate-caramel aroma of coffee.
Coffee prepared in a geyser coffee maker contains 30% less caffeine
Before pouring the coffee into cups, stir it directly into the moka using a teaspoon.
In addition to the text, I have prepared a short video for you on how to make delicious coffee in a geyser coffee maker. Video without voiceover, even children can understand it!
It is recommended to drink coffee brewed in a geyser coffee maker without sugar. This wish comes not so much from concerns about health, but from preserving the unique taste and aroma of the drink.
Sugar kills the characteristic aroma and taste of coffee
Suitable cookware
Coffee is brewed using different devices. To prepare a delicious drink, coffee lovers buy the following:
- Turka: traditional and common tableware. It is a pot-bellied copper barrel with a long handle.
- Pour over: A new cooking method that is common in Western countries. A funnel passes hot water through a paper filter filled with ground coffee mass.
- Geyser coffee maker: is a vessel in which hot water from the lower section rises to the upper section, where the ground coffee powder is located.
- Coffee machine: an electrical device where all actions are automated. Popular.

The process of making coffee in a geyser coffee maker
- Insert the filled filter into the lower compartment and close the moka using the upper part.
- Place on the stove, the heat should be medium or low. Thus, the water temperature will rise gradually, and the coffee will flow more slowly into the upper compartment. As the Italians say, if you are in a hurry, go to the bar and they will serve you coffee instantly!
- It doesn't matter whether you close the lid of the geyser coffee maker or not. Remember that when the lid is closed, you will be able to hear a characteristic sound at the end of cooking. This is very convenient if you are not in the kitchen.
- In the meantime, while our aromatic drink is being prepared, let’s start choosing cups. The volume of a coffee cup depends on the type of coffee drink. A classic espresso cup should have thick walls and an egg shape.
- When the water in the lower compartment of the moka warms up enough, it will rise up, pass through the filter with ground coffee and begin to rise along the groove into the upper section of the geyser coffee maker.

Grain consumption
Grams in spoons
Calculation of the amount of coffee mass depends on the type of cookware. You need to put one amount of ground powder into the cup in the coffee machine, and another into the cuvette.
The measure of weight varies from spoon to spoon.
A tablespoon holds up to 12 grams of coffee powder, a heaping spoon holds 20.
A heaped teaspoon holds 6-7 grams of coffee. These numbers are considered the norm for making espresso. Without a slide, the indicator drops to 4.
A small coffee spoon takes 2.5 grams of grain powder.
The topic is covered in detail in the article “How many grams of coffee are in a teaspoon and a tablespoon.”
Spoons in cups
How much coffee a barista will use depends on the size of the cup they use for their drinks.
A small demitasse cup holds 60 milliliters of liquid, to brew which you need to take 6-7 grams of coffee mass.
With a capacity of 200 milliliters, one cup contains 10 grams.

Quantity and cost
Let's determine the consumption of coffee beans. In a coffee machine, for example, you can prepare different drinks. It all depends on their type and strength, as well as the variety of coffee berries.
The machine grinds 7-8 grams of coffee per serving.
It turns out that from 1 kg of coffee you can make: 1000/8 = 125 cups. If we consider that high-quality varieties of Arabica cost 600 rubles, then the price of beans for 1 serving of espresso is: 600/1000×8 = 4.8 rubles.
Espresso in a coffee shop costs from 60 rubles. From one kilogram the coffee shop will receive: 125×60=7500 rubles in revenue, with costs of 600 rubles.
Interesting! How to brew espresso in Turk
A drink from a coffee machine sells for 35 rubles. From a kilogram of powder you can get revenue in the amount of: 125 × 32 = 4375 rubles at a cost of 600 rubles.
A coffee machine costs on average 50,000 rubles. To recoup its purchase, the coffee shop needs to brew 7 kilograms of ground powder to sell coffee.
Carob coffee makers - consumption
Horn models are a good alternative to automatic ones:
- are cheaper;
- more mechanical functions means fewer breakdowns;
- There are multifunctional devices that are in no way inferior to automatic machines - semi-professional ones.
How many grams of beans are in a mug of coffee also depends on the variety. If it is expensive, from high mountain plantations, the taste can be felt even with 5 - 6 grams. Cheaper blends are used up faster if you buy a kilogram pack.
If there are electronic settings, they relate only to the amount of water in carob models, since the user fills the cone himself as much as he sees fit.
Attention! Almost all coffee shops have professional carob coffee machines. This indicates the reliability of the equipment and the ease of design, use, and maintenance. One dried grain weighs 0.3 g - how many there are in a cup of coffee can be calculated by dividing 7 by 0.3. Makes 23 – 24 pieces
Number of beans in different types of coffee machines
Capsule machine
This device is easy to operate. And you don’t need to calculate how many grams of ground powder to put in a mug.
To prepare the drink, use a special capsule - one per cup. It contains 6-9 grams of ground coffee mass. One kilogram is enough for 111-167 capsules.
Coffee maker
The equipment operates on the drip principle. The coffee mass is poured into a funnel in the form of a fine mesh and water is added.
Hot water passes through the coffee layer and drops dropwise into a transparent container. Place two heaped teaspoons of powder on one cup - 12-14 grams. Therefore, a kilogram of grains will yield 71-83 servings.
Turk
Add 2-3 teaspoons of ground powder – 8-12 grams – to a copper container.
From a kilogram package you can brew 83-125 cups of tasty and aromatic liquid.
Coffee machines
The memory bookmarks of each device contain a specific program for preparing a drink. The software also allows you to adjust the strength. Three modes:
- strong – 10 grams;
- average – 9;
- weak – 8.
When consuming 1 kg of coffee in a coffee machine, 100, 110 and 120 servings are obtained.
French press
This is a glass teapot with a press handle that is attached to a fine mesh. Coarse or fine grinding is suitable for this cookware.

Chemex
The cookware was invented by the chemist Peter Schlumbom. This is a glass flask with a narrow and high funnel. It is needed for comfortable pouring of liquid and removal of excess air.
A paper filter is placed inside the vessel, into which hot water is first poured, and then ground grains are poured. Proportions: for 500 milligrams of boiling water – 30 grams of coarse or medium-ground powder.
After 5 minutes, the filter with grounds is removed, and the invigorating liquid is poured into 4 cups. A kilogram of beans in a Chemex will yield 132 servings.
How much energy does a coffee machine consume?
]Jura coffee machines[/anchor] state that the energy consumption of their equipment is 4 – 30 W/hour , depending on the model. For example, the Jura Micro 1 consumes only 4W/hour at 1350W (a heating element that only works for a few seconds to reach the desired temperature), while the Jura Giga 9 consumes 30W/hour at 2300W . The declared consumption takes into account the idle time of the coffee machine without energy savings. 5-10 minutes to prepare one or two cups of coffee , including the preparation of cappuccino. We are even too lazy to count how much you will spend at home to prepare 3-4 cups a day, 15 kopecks ?!
What is the importance of water for a coffee machine?
Someone will think that water is generally not an expense item, just like electricity. But for a pragmatist, this is one of the main expenses along with coffee beans. Untreated tap water is not suitable for use in coffee machines. Firstly, the taste of coffee is unimportant. Secondly, bad water quickly destroys coffee equipment. The failure of a coffee machine is item 7 on our list of expense items. And this is perhaps one of the most expensive expenses after purchasing a new coffee machine.
Our advice when choosing a coffee machine.
Have a nice day, friends! Now we decided to prepare a concise list.
Have a nice day, friends! Now we have decided to prepare a concise list of answers to questions that in most cases customers ask when choosing an ordinary coffee machine (not a capsule one). We hope that our simple answers will help you better understand coffee machines and make the right choice when purchasing!
How many types of coffee does a typical coffee machine prepare? 1. Ordinary coffee machines prepare one type of espresso coffee. It is the basis for all other coffee drinks (cappuccino, Americano, latte, lungo, etc.). But with the help of a cappuccino machine (an iron tube next to the outlet from which coffee flows), you can manually froth the milk and prepare any coffee drink that you need (cappuccino, latte, etc.). 2. Premium coffee machines in automatic mode can prepare cappuccino in addition to espresso (if equipped with an auto-cappuccino machine). The autocappuccino maker, in turn, is a container of milk that is installed in a special place on the coffee machine or next to it.
On what basis should you choose a coffee machine for your home (office)? First you need to find how many servings of coffee the coffee machine should prepare. If you need to prepare 4 or more servings at one family meal, then when choosing a coffee machine you need to take into account the volume of the water container. The larger the capacity of the container, the less water you will need to add to quickly make several servings of coffee at once. If the family is small or there are only 1 or 2 coffee lovers in it, then this aspect can be ignored. When choosing a coffee machine for your office, we recommend choosing devices with a larger water capacity. As a result, your employees will not “torment” themselves by constantly adding water.
How much space in the kitchen will the coffee machine take up? The coffee machine will take up space in the kitchen like a microwave oven (maybe a little less or a little more). Also pay attention to the weight of the coffee machine, which is indicated in the model description. Some models weigh more than 15 kilograms, so the space allocated for the coffee machine must support its weight.
Does the coffee machine make a sound? Coffee machine manufacturers do not indicate the noise level that the coffee machine makes when operating. But with all this, it is necessary to take into account that cheap models usually make louder noise than their expensive counterparts. The best way to find out how noisy a coffee machine is is by watching a video review. There, the main characters usually prepare coffee right in front of the camera, so you can immediately find out whether this coffee machine is suitable for you in terms of noise level or not.
What kind of coffee should you use in your coffee machine? All coffee machines are adapted for making coffee from beans. Some models have the ability to use ground coffee. We advise everyone to use only bean coffee, since the freshness of the grind is very important when making the drink.
How to care for your coffee machine? The coffee machine always comes with detailed instructions on how to care for it. Routine maintenance involves descaling the coffee machine. Each machine is supplied with cleaning fluid. It must be diluted with water in a suitable proportion, poured into a water container and prepared “technical coffee”, “cappuccino”. There is nothing complicated in this procedure. For convenience, we recommend using purchased filtered water in coffee machines. With it, the machine will last longer and the coffee will taste better.
One model is stronger than the other. What is the impact of this? A more powerful coffee machine grinds coffee and heats water faster. Because of this, a portion of coffee is prepared faster.

We offer the following calculation:
Let's take 10 days of rest.
One cup of espresso requires grinding 7 grams of beans, double espresso requires 12 grams of beans, i.e. On average, you need 10 grams of grains per cup.
One person drinks 4-5 cups of coffee in 1 day.
It is easy to calculate that in 10 days one person drinks about 50 cups of coffee.
Two people will drink about 100 cups, multiply by 10 grams per 100.
It turns out that for 2 people for 10 days of rest you will need less than 1 kg of coffee beans.
But we will suggest that you purchase, for starters, 0.5 kilograms of grains, so that in the first week you can better understand your actual consumption and order more if necessary.

What does the coffee machine power?
So, let's list the points without which the coffee machine will not give you a wonderful drink.
- Electricity
- Coffee beans (roasted)
- Water
- Milk (for cappuccino lovers)
- Desserts (yes, have you ever wondered if you’ll just drink coffee)
- Service (the coffee machine requires attention like a car)
- Unexpected coffee machine repair.
Now let's figure out where, what and how much. The costs are average and pressing for Moscow.
The weight of coffee is affected by its grinding
Everything that is written above about weight measures applies to universal medium grind coffee, applicable for both a coffee machine and a carob coffee maker. In most cases, coffee in packs comes with this specific grind.
With a fine grind, which is used for cezve, more coffee goes into the spoon, and with a coarse grind - for a French press - less. Typically, a fine grind with grains ground into dust gives a weight of approximately grams more than the average in a spoon of the same volume. And vice versa: hard grinding will weigh about grams less compared to average grinding.
