What it is

A short excursion for those who have not encountered drip coffee makers (like me until recently).

It is from these coffee makers that they drink coffee in American films.

Still from the film "Pulp Fiction". A waitress pours coffee from a jug of a drip coffee maker.

A still from the TV series Twin Peaks.

It was in such a coffee maker that the coffee that Agent Cooper admired in the Twin Peaks series was prepared.

If you see names like “regular”, “batch brew” or “filter coffee” on the coffee shop menu, then know that it will be prepared in a drip coffee maker.

Which one to choose for your home?

The choice of a drip coffee maker should be made based on a number of technical criteria and buyer preferences, such as:

  1. Power . A value of 600–1000 W is considered optimal, since the coffee does not brew too quickly and has time to reach the desired quality.
  2. Coffee pot volume . The number of cups of coffee that the machine can brew depends on it. The optimal volume is considered to be 0.6–1.5 liters, that is, 4–12 cups of coffee.
  3. Flask material . Heat-resistant glass only.
  4. Filters for drip coffee makers . There are disposable (paper) and reusable (nylon or metal). Disposable ones are more preferable, as they will allow you to brew rich coffee without impurities, but they need to be changed constantly.
  5. Drop-stop system . It is a must, as it protects the heating element from moisture.
  6. Additional functions . The functions of a power-on timer, delayed start, selection of coffee strength and the number of mugs to be brewed are considered useful. A built-in coffee grinder with several degrees of grinding of beans would also be useful.

Best models

When choosing a coffee maker, it is better to choose a model from a well-known brand with a good reputation. This guarantees build quality, the device will last longer and will not present any unpleasant surprises. The price range is wide: the simplest models cost less than 2,000 rubles, the cost of advanced coffee makers with an electronic display, automatic control and a built-in coffee grinder can reach up to 12,000 rubles.

Tefal CM321832

A drip coffee maker is a good choice for people who love filtered coffee. The device prepares 5-8 cups of aromatic drink in 10 minutes, the process is started by simply pressing a button. Filtration coffee makers are durable, easy to maintain, and the price range allows anyone to choose the ideal model.

Peculiarities

The peculiarity of drip coffee makers is that they prepare a lot of coffee at a time (usually up to one liter, there are miniature home options with a drink volume of up to 300-500 ml) and store the coffee hot. These coffee makers can keep coffee hot in two ways:

  1. The finished coffee flows directly into a thermos jug, such as Bonavita.
  2. The finished coffee flows into a regular glass jug, under which a heating element is located.

I honestly admit that keeping coffee hot is a very dubious function; it clearly does not improve the taste. Heated coffee loses its aroma and takes on the taste of cheap instant coffee powder. It would be better if it cooled down :)

Drip coffee makers are no louder than an electric kettle. They do not have a noisy vibration pump. There is a video in English that tells how such coffee makers distill water:

Some coffee makers pour water onto the coffee from a kind of “shower”, wetting the entire surface of the coffee bookmark evenly. Some, like my Bosch TKA 3A031, pour into one hole.

Tricks

Trick #1. You can use filters from Hario in a drip coffee maker if you bend their corner.

Trick number 2. Drip coffee makers do not always pour water evenly onto the coffee. After the coffee maker pours a little water on the coffee and the coffee floats, you can stir the coffee with a spoon or stick. The purpose of stirring is to “drown” floating coffee particles. Do not move the spoon along the bottom of the filter: this can tear the filter or press coffee particles into the pores of the filter, which will ruin the entire preparation process.

Trick #3. You don't have to use trick #2. For example, my Bosch brews better if you don’t stir coffee in it: the coffee is stirred by a stream of hot water. A friend and I tried to brew it in a Moccamaster - without stirring it produces tasteless coffee due to uneven extraction.

Which coffee maker is better, drip or capsule?

In the budget price segment, the choice of coffee makers will most often be between capsule and drip models. The principle of their operation is significantly different, but both options are very popular.

To understand which coffee maker is better, drip or capsule, you need to study the principles of their operation, advantages and disadvantages. This will help you make the right decision and purchase the best device for creating coffee drinks.
