What is a geyser coffee maker for an induction cooker?

In a geyser coffee maker, the drink is brewed due to steam pressure , which displaces hot water from the lower reservoir into a filter funnel with ground coffee, and then into the upper part - a storage tank for the finished product.

Important! Only those “geyser” models whose bottom is made of ferromagnetic materials are suitable for induction hobs.

The most popular of these is stainless steel . The necessary characteristics are also inherent in cast iron. Aluminum, from which traditional geyser-type coffee makers are made, does not have such properties.

Another
distinctive feature of induction geyser coffee makers is the size of the bottom .
Its diameter is larger than that of classic models. This is necessary to ensure that the cookware covers most of the burner. Otherwise, heating simply does not occur.

The induction geyser coffee maker can also be used on gas or electric burners.

The ferromagnetic bottom does not interfere with heating from open heat sources. In this sense, a geyser designed for induction cookers is a universal model.

The main differences between a geyser for an induction cooker

A geyser coffee maker designed for an induction cooker has its own characteristics.

  • Material of manufacture . This coffee maker has a bottom made of steel with ferromagnetic properties. Some manufacturers have all-steel coffee makers, and some produce combination models, leaving the walls aluminum. To determine whether a particular model is suitable for an induction cooker, you can conduct a test using a magnet.
  • Bottom diameter . In order to use a geyser coffee maker on an induction hob, some manufacturers have changed the classic design of the device, expanding the diameter of the bottom. This was necessary so that the dishes covered most of the working area of the burner. Otherwise, heating simply does not occur.

Working principle of induction heating

Induction heating is based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction , i.e. the effect of an electric current appearing in a closed circuit due to a change in the magnetic flux passing through this circuit.

A hob or stove operating on this principle has a glass-ceramic (most often) surface, under which there is an induction coil through which an electric current flows with a frequency of 20 - 60 kHz.

During the passage of high-frequency alternating current, a pulsating magnetic field appears in the coil.

If at this moment there is a material with magnetic properties on the surface of the plate, an electric current begins to be generated in it , under the influence of which heating occurs .

Hot dishes, in turn, transfer heat to both the food in it and the surface of the stove.

Working principle of an induction cooker

Before you start choosing cookware, it’s a good idea to understand exactly how an electric induction panel works. The principle of its operation lies in the property of magnetic fields to produce high-frequency vortex flows. Under the glass surface of the panel there is a coil that converts electrical energy into induction. This is how the kitchen utensils heat up. Incorrectly selected cookware for an induction cooker, in particular a coffee pot, simply will not heat up and perform its functions.

Advantages of electric induction panels:

  • spectacular appearance;
  • rapid heating of dishes, while the surface itself remains cold;
  • automatic shutdown after removing dishes.

Caring for this type of equipment is quite easy, but you should avoid getting sugar on the glass panel, as this can lead to stains.

Advantages

An induction cooker is a modern kitchen equipment that has a number of attractive properties for the user. Among the main advantages when making coffee are the following:

  1. Induction heating ensures a gradual increase in water temperature , which protects the coffee from overburning.
  2. Cooking speed. Due to the fact that induction heats water very quickly, the brewing time is noticeably reduced .
  3. Safety. The likelihood of getting burned is minimized, since the hob automatically turns off when the coffee maker from its surface .
  4. Ease of use. Caring for an induction hob is quite simple, because it cools down to ambient temperature in a matter of seconds . If coffee “runs away” and spills on the stove, it will not burn and can be easily removed.
  5. Such devices are usually equipped with temperature sensors that clearly maintain the desired heating, and a timer that controls the cooking duration. Thus, it becomes possible to program the cooking process literally minute by minute.
  6. The burners have a smooth surface and do not protrude above the hob. Therefore, the coffee maker can be moved in any direction .

How to brew coffee?

  1. Disassemble the coffee maker.
  2. Pour cold water into the lower reservoir.
  3. Fill the filter funnel with ground coffee.
  4. Assemble the device.
  5. Place it on the work surface so that the bottom covers most of the burner.
  6. Turn on the stove. Select mode. If the instructions do not contain information about a special mode for making coffee, select a power of 70 - 80%, and then reduce it to 50%. This will ensure even and smooth heating.
  7. Wait until all the liquid goes to the top. Now the geyser can be removed from the stove and the drink can be poured into cups.

Advice! It is better not to brew flavored coffee in a geyser coffee maker: it is unknown how the essences will manifest themselves under intense heating.

You can prepare a drink with spices (cinnamon, cardamom, cloves). To do this, they must be ground and mixed with coffee grounds before brewing.

What is a geyser coffee maker, how it works

Let's start with the fact that the invention of the heroine of our review dates back to 1933, the authorship belongs, so surprise, to the Italian - Signor Alfonso Bialetti. And he named his creation Moka Express. Since then and to this day, it is the company that glorifies the name of the creator that is the recognized leader and “trend setter” in the field of production and promotion of geyser coffee makers. In most non-Russian-speaking countries, they are usually called simply Moka or Moka Pot.

The basic design of a geyser coffee maker is simple to the point of genius: two twisting vessels, between them a funnel with a perforated platform for placing coffee, and a filter. How does it work? Heating from below, the resulting steam creates pressure, displacing liquid from the narrow to the wide part of the funnel. Hot water passes through the ground powder, is saturated with its taste and aroma, continues to move up the tube built into the upper bowl, and is finally pushed out into the coffee pot. This is an imitation of the nature of a geyser. Hence the terminology.

What to expect from the resulting drink? Preparation takes place under a pressure of about 3 bar (plus or minus is possible), on the basis of which you can draw an analogy with a good strong espresso from a 4-bar carob coffee maker. It’s difficult to count on the refinement of taste, as in more advanced “machines.” However, a lot depends on the “operator” of manual brewing, the type and quality of coffee, and grinding. In any case, the result will be better than from drip “misunderstandings” (even if you dilute the coffee from the “geyser” completely).

How to choose?

When choosing a geyser suitable for induction, a number of factors :

  1. The material from which the bottom of the device is made. The best option would be stainless steel . To determine whether a cookware is suitable for an induction cooker, simply place a magnet on the bottom of the cookware. If it attracts and holds, then the container is suitable. Otherwise, no.
  2. The diameter of the bottom must be greater than 12 cm (that is, at least 1/2 the diameter of a standard burner).
  3. The thickness of the bottom should be from 2 to 6 millimeters .
  4. Pay attention to the handle, evaluate its convenience. Models where it is made of non-heating material (for example, bakelite) have an advantage.
  5. Consider how many servings you plan to cook at one time. Manufacturers offer coffee makers designed for different numbers of cups of drink. The design feature of the geyser is such that a strictly defined volume of coffee is brewed in it : if it is designed for 3 servings, then it will not be possible to brew more or less at a time.

Reference! Cookware intended for induction heating usually has a special symbol - several vertical loops, accompanied by the inscription "Induction".

What is a disk adapter?

An adapter or adapter in this case is a device that allows you to use cookware made from materials unsuitable for this purpose for cooking on an induction stove.
The adapter, which is a disk 3–6 mm thick, consists of several layers.

Thick metal circles have a structure similar to a sandwich, with ferromagnetic layers in their composition, or are made entirely of ferromagnetic steel.

This adapter replaces the magnetic bottom , which is equipped with specialized cookware. Installed on the hob, it will transfer heat to the bottom of the vessel placed on it. Adapters with a diameter of 12 to 14 mm are suitable for coffee makers .

Rating and review of the best models

Well-known manufacturers of household and kitchen goods offer high-quality geyser coffee makers for purchase, which are distinguished by efficient operation, compactness and ease of use.

Thanks to the wide range, choosing a device will not be difficult, but before purchasing a device, buyers should pay attention to the main technical characteristics of the models in question, as well as study their advantages and disadvantages.

On the Russian market, geysers suitable for induction cookers are represented mainly by models made in Europe and China. Italian brands have earned the best reputation: Bialetti, Pezzetti and GET . Models produced in China - Gipfel and Berghoff - .

Reference! The Bialetti company is a pioneer in the production of geyser coffee makers. Its founder, Alfonso Bialetti, was the first to invent and patent such a device.

Rating 2021: TOP 10 best Turks for induction cookers

Advantages:

In general, I don’t notice any special advantages. Except that, compared to a Turkish coffee, the coffee doesn’t run off onto the stove if you hesitate and don’t keep track, and the coffee turns out nicer than from a Turkish coffee, so I use it all the time. I purchased it from the official Bialetti store.

Flaws:

This is not made in any Italy - China is honestly indicated on the box. Very high coffee consumption - this is the main drawback! The body itself is made neatly, but the handle is attached clumsily and the edges of the metal part of the handle are not processed at all - everything is clumsy. When unwinding, you can easily scratch your hand. If I hadn’t cut my finger on the edge of the lid while washing it today, I would hardly have written this review. The lid hangs loose and doesn’t lock in any way; you have to hold it when pouring the finished drink, otherwise it will slam shut and you’ll spill coffee on the table. The edge of the lid of my copy is very poorly processed, which, as I already said, can easily be cut. They didn’t think of making any spout or depression around the edge of the coffee maker to allow the coffee to be poured accurately. The thread connecting the parts of the device is not cut, but rolled, and is easily damaged. Once I even twisted it obliquely and then untwisted it for half an hour. The metal is stainless steel, when heated it becomes very dark and the appearance deteriorates. I tried to rub it with anything, but it was useless; this tarnish can only be removed by polishing on a wheel.

A comment:

I have a 4 serving model. Only their portions are considered to be almost 40 milliliters! Therefore, the finished drink is one small cup - 150-160 ml. If you like (like me) to drink large cups of coffee, then this is definitely not your choice. I don’t recommend taking a large container - a lot of coffee is consumed. So many. From one serving for this coffee maker you can prepare a drink twice in a medium turk (about 300-350 ml) and at the same time no less rich, but not as tasty. In a geyser it is a little more pleasant and, as it were, “filtered”. The drink is rich, but not so rich that it can at least somehow be called “espresso” - nothing like that happens! If you pour less coffee in volume, then the water passing through the funnel does not wash it all, it forms gullies and pits, and the strength of the drink decreases sharply. Sometimes, for some reason, the drink turns out not hot and weak, and this does not depend on the preparation mode - I tried all sorts of options - from long and slow heating, to hot water in the tank and fast heating on gas, but I still don’t understand why the quality depends. You can pour hot water into the tank, then you will get coffee faster. No need to compact the powder! Ideally, it should be medium-ground and evenly poured to the edge of the funnel. I use it every day for almost six months. I can’t say anything laudatory about this model and geyser coffee makers in general, as advertisers and sales managers write in hundreds of reviews - an absolutely ordinary and uneconomical dish. The upper part is difficult to clean - there is a depression between the wall and the convex bottom, where a little drink remains and it sticks to the heated surface. If someone has not used such a device, I do not recommend buying it. You won't get anything special from these dishes! And don’t expect a “divine drink” or anything that sales managers who are bored at work write. The thing is absolutely worthless!
