Coffee Lavazza – review of the Italian brand

Italian Lavazza coffee, the types of which will appeal to the most sophisticated gourmets, is known throughout the world for its high quality and unsurpassed taste and aroma.

This coffee comforts and pleases those who find themselves far from home, regardless of whether it is prepared by a barista, taking into account professional secrets and subtleties of design, or by an ordinary vending machine at the airport. In grains, pods and capsules, ground and instant - “lavazza” whatever your heart desires. And only excellent quality.

history of the company

It all started with the decision of Luigi Lavazzo, who came from a farming family, to start his own business. In 1895 he came to Turin and opened a grocery store. The friendly and enterprising owner of the food store was quickly remembered, and the number of regular customers grew. And Luigi in the evenings, looking through the remaining reserves of olive oil, cereals and spices, inhaled the aroma of coffee beans.

Bags of coffee stood in the darkest corner, and when Señor Lavazzo looked at them, he began to dream of distant countries, where dark-skinned women in bright outfits collected dark red fruits from narrow-leaved trees.

At that time, no one could offer better and more delicious coffee. Therefore, the small grocery store quickly grew into the world's most famous coffee company. The dawn of this enterprise came in the post-war period. In 1947, the brand's current logo was invented. Despite Luigi's death in 1949, coffee sales not only did not decline, but increased so much that in the late 1950s. the company acquired its own coffee roasting plant.

Now Lavazza has become the largest coffee producer in the world. The company produces many types of it with an excellent blend, differing from each other in the percentage of different types of coffee in one package.

The company opened a branch abroad in 1982, in Paris, and in 1990, in order to popularize Italian coffee in the British capital, it created Lavazza Coffees Ltd.

The process of conquering the world continues today:

  • in 2014, Lavazza, together with Illycaffè, took part in an experiment - sequencing the genome of Arabica coffee;
  • in 2015, the leading coffee brand in the Baltic countries and Denmark, MERRILD, was added to the company and an Australian distribution company was purchased;
  • in 2021, the French Carte Noire with its plant in Occitania became part of the Lavazza Group of Companies, which allowed the Italian brand to occupy a strategic position in the fifth coffee market in the world - French;
  • in 2021, the large North American retail chain KICKING HORSE COFFEE was acquired.

According to the world ranking, oil is in the first position of the most sold goods, and coffee is in second, with the rest far behind. Lavazza also deserves credit for this arrangement.

Lavazza in numbers

The Lavazza company uses coffee from the best plantations for its magnificent blends, plus modern bean roasting technology, proprietary multi-layer light-protective packaging with a one-way valve that prevents the penetration of oxygen and moisture - all this provides the unique taste and aroma characteristic of Lavazza coffee.

  • 27 billion cups of Lavazza coffee are consumed worldwide every year.
  • 1.9 billion euros - annual turnover.
  • 90 countries in which the company has branches and a distribution network.
  • 3,000 employees.
  • 6 enterprises: 3 Italian factories and 1 French, two hubs - Brazilian and Indian, to serve local markets.
  • 50 Training Center Lavazza, where every year 30 thousand clients, journalists and bloggers learn the intricacies of making espresso and study the history of coffee.
  • 60.3% of the company's income comes from foreign markets.

Interesting facts about the brand

Since 1989, when the company offered the world the Lavazza Espresso Point system - a coffee machine using pods (Italian: cialda - tablet), disposable bags of ground coffee, vending machines have filled offices and public places - shops, train stations.

In 2004, the expansion effect intensified: Lavazza BLUE appeared on the market - a new espresso preparation system for offices, with a self-protecting capsule, which made the drink even easier to prepare and more popular.

In the forties, at one of the meetings at the Circolo degli Artisti, Beppe Lavazzo, always interested in art and keen on photography, met the artist and ordered him a collection of advertising postcards. The deal was so successful that orders began to be repeated regularly, although they made offers to different artists.

Photographer Thierry Le Goux, who took part in the creation of the 2004 calendar, created a work in which a cup of Lavazza espresso flies into space.

Ten years later, in 2014, Le Goux’s fantasies came true: Italian Samantha Cristoforetti became the first astronaut to drink coffee in orbit. The International Space Station installed ISSpresso, the first capsule espresso machine named after the International Space Station (ISS) to operate successfully in the extreme conditions of space.

Lavazza's partner in this project was the Italian engineering company Argotec, which designs aerospace systems.

Lavazza coffee: how to distinguish the original from the fake.

Information from November 16, 2019.

Signs of counterfeit Lavazza coffee, how to spot a fake in just one glance:

1. The simplest method, external signs, the presence of a characteristic crease at the end of the pack, fakes have a fold along the entire pack, everything is very simple, if there is such a fold, then it is 100% fake. This factor is due to the fact that scammers order ready-made packs from a printing house, and they are compacted during transportation and storage, thereby forming a crease.

Original Lavazza packs are formed directly at the factory from foil tape, which is stored in reels and soldered at the time of packaging.

Remember, the presence of a crease directly indicates that this is a 100% fake, but in turn, the absence of such a crease does not always indicate the originality of the product. To be sure, buy products from trusted suppliers.

Original coffee, photo:

2. Also quite simple, but at the same time very effective for identifying counterfeit packs of lavazza bean coffee in 1 kg, 0.5 kg and 0.25 kg packaging. This method is not suitable for ground coffee.

The scammers do not have branded, original Lavazza cardboard boxes. This is an extra expense item and, most importantly, a risk for the fraudster; not every corrugated packaging factory will agree to remain silent, much less participate in a criminal crime.

Ask the new supplier to deliver your order in the original Lavazza cardboard box. The manufacturer packs 1 kg packs in a box of 6 pieces. You do not have to order all 6 kg, any conscientious seller is familiar with the situation of counterfeits and will treat your request with understanding. The box must be from the exact item you ordered (that is, if you ordered Lavazza Oro coffee, then the box should be from Lavazza Oro, this is important, if they give it from a different item, then most likely it is a scam). Also, in an ideal case, the time and production date numbers on a pack of coffee and on the box itself should differ by only 5-10 minutes, that is, they should be somewhere nearby, since the time machine first puts the production time on the pack, and only then sets the time layout for a box of coffee. In the photo you can see that the coffee was packaged at 11:57, and the box was completed at 12:04, here is the original.

The abundance of counterfeit products sometimes shocks consumers, especially when they encounter them in a place they would not expect at all - in a chain store. It is clear that scammers are trying to counterfeit the most popular goods.

Italian-made Lavazza coffee, which has won the love of many Russians, was no exception. Lately, information has increasingly appeared about the sale of counterfeits of this brand, and naturally, no one can tell you better how to protect yourself from buying counterfeit products.

Signs of a company selling counterfeits

It is clear that the fraudsters themselves who produce counterfeit products are rarely directly involved in its sale. As a rule, they find small companies that, in the pursuit of profit, are tempted by low delivery prices. There are several signs that can make you think about the quality of the products offered by a certain company.

  • No cashless payments. This is perhaps one of the main signs of a company selling counterfeit goods. If you are told that payments are only for cash, then you should think about it - this is an alarming signal. A company that does not have a bank account can definitely be classified as unreliable. Will the manufacturer enter into a distribution cooperation agreement with a company that essentially works on its own? Then where can she get the goods? Either from an official dealer, but it will already be offered at a much higher price, or from counterfeit manufacturers offering their products at a bargain price.

    We recommend that you resort to this trick: ask the company about the possibility of paying for coffee to the company’s bank account; if they refuse you, even citing temporary difficulties, you should not cooperate with such a company.

  • They don't provide a receipt. It is especially important to pay attention to this when ordering for the first time. The absence of a receipt may indicate that the company does not have a cash register, and therefore is not registered with the tax authority. Draw your own conclusions.
  • The limited number of employees may lead one to believe that this is some kind of “sharashkin’s office.” When the same employee is engaged in both receiving orders and delivering them, this may indicate a lack of professionalism and a desire to make a quick profit. What you are looking at is most likely an ordinary “reseller” engaged in resale. Such offices, even the word “company” is somehow unethical to apply to them, are not interested in verifying the quality of the products they sell.

How to distinguish original Lavazza packaging from a fake?

There is no point in studying all the variants of detected counterfeits. Fraudsters improve their products, making them less and less outwardly different from the original. It is better to carefully examine the features of the original packaging. The manufacturer does everything necessary to make it different from the fake one. So, starting from July 2021, we updated the design of many coffee packages. This is especially true for the most frequently counterfeited brands - ORO, Crema e Aroma, Rossa, Dek and Caffe Espresso.

There are still a lot of unsold original products in the old packaging on the Russian market, but along with them, buyers can already see ORO in the new format. Therefore, let’s look at the features of the new Qualita ORO design:

  • in the center on the front side of the package there is a horizontal black and red stripe (black at the bottom, red at the top);
  • slightly darker packaging color;
  • a block appeared on the package describing the flavor profile and strength of taste, but information about the degree of roasting disappeared;
  • some information (in particular about the importer) is in Russian;
  • the round red logo with the brand name has been changed;
  • updated logos for cooking methods.

What general requirements must the original packaging of Lavazza coffee meet?

  • High quality packaging: absence of delamination, unnecessary creases and folds, especially at its ends; factory taped seams along the entire length, the presence of a check valve with a slot.
  • The contents of the coffee pack are evenly distributed throughout the entire volume. This is especially true for ground coffee packed using the vacuum method.
  • The font is bold and clear, the colors are bright, and the text complies with the Customs and Technical Regulations of the Russian Federation. According to legal requirements, the packaging of food products, and coffee belongs specifically to this category of goods, must indicate: NAME, WEIGHT, DATE AND TIME OF MANUFACTURE, BATCH NUMBER, STORAGE CONDITIONS and EXPIRATION DATE, NAME AND ADDRESS OF THE MANUFACTURER.
  • The information listed above is indicated by the importer on the ADDITIONAL STICKER. Its presence is an integral requirement, because on the packaging of the European manufacturer only the expiration date is indicated, and - Nota bene! — production time (European regulations are simplified compared to ours).

An important point is that mostly kilogram packages are counterfeited. But in any case, check: if the hours and minutes of production are not indicated on a pack of coffee, regardless of the weight denomination, then it is definitely counterfeit!

We examine the contents of the Lavazza pack

It is not always possible to distinguish a fake from external data. But the contents of the package loudly testify to its origin, confirming either its authenticity or counterfeit.

  • The aroma of real, high-quality coffee cannot be faked. Therefore, if there is counterfeit inside, then when you open the package, you will immediately “feel” it by the absence of that coffee smell reaching the most remote corners of the room.
  • Coffee beans produced by Lavazza are characterized by a uniform degree of roasting. The grains are perfect, the color is uniform - brown-chocolate. Fake Lavazza coffee beans are distinguished by their heterogeneity and a wide range of colors. It feels like the whole roasting waste was simply poured into the pack.
  • A drink made from counterfeit coffee does not have a distinctive taste (there may be an earthy taste due to the use of Robusta - coffee beans of lower quality) and does not produce the foam characteristic of the original Lavazza.

To summarize, purchasing real original Lavazza coffee is not such a difficult task. The best way to protect yourself from counterfeiting is to order products from a trusted official dealer of the Italian brand - Vodokhleb LLC (Moscow and Moscow region)

How Lavazza coffee is prepared in Italy

Italians learned to brew invigorating coffee a long time ago; it has already become a tradition for them. Most often they brew espresso in a coffee maker. The drink is also prepared in a Turk and milk is added instead of water.

In Italian coffee shops, real espresso is served in small cups, filled halfway to fully reveal its taste and aroma.

Many Italians drink iced coffee by cooling the brewed drink and combining it with milk, sugar and whipped cream.

Lavazza based drinks

  • Latte – milk is added to the finished espresso;
  • Cappuccino – brewed with high thick foam, decorated with grated chocolate;
  • Americano is prepared in a coffee maker;
  • Lungu is brewed with double the amount of water, this produces strong and aromatic coffee;
  • Mocha - consists of one part espresso, hot chocolate, milk and cream;
  • Coretto - espresso with the addition of bourbon;
  • Glace – made from espresso and ice cream, served as a dessert;
  • Mochiato is a drink made from espresso and milk;
  • Romano – brewed with lemon juice.

How is Italian coffee prepared?

In Italy, the culture of coffee consumption has developed over many years. For Italians, coffee is not just a drink - it is a national tradition. The most common method of preparing coffee is espresso, brewed in a special “moka” coffee maker.

Another secret of Italian coffee can be considered the traditional method of brewing the drink directly in milk, without adding water . In this case, pour 200 ml of cold milk into the Turk and add 1 tsp. finely ground coffee. Sugar is served separately with this drink.

In Italy they also love freddo or iced coffee . To prepare it, already brewed and cooled coffee is diluted with milk, sugar and cream are added to taste and whisked thoroughly. Serve it in a tall glass with ice.

In Italian coffee shops, real espresso is usually served in small, thick-walled porcelain cups. But coffee is poured into them only up to half the volume of the cup in order to maximize the taste and aroma of the drink.

For making espresso, the following Lavazza varieties are better suited:

  • Qualita Oro;
  • Grand Espresso;
  • Espresso;
  • Gran Riserva;
  • Qualita Rossa.

For mocha, cappuccino and latte, it is good to use the following varieties:

  • Crema e Gusto;
  • Decaffeinato;
  • Super Crema;
  • Gold Selection.

From the huge range of Lavazza varieties, everyone can easily choose their favorite one.

How to choose the right Lavazza coffee

Some unscrupulous manufacturers may produce counterfeits instead of natural coffee by mixing cheap varieties. Usually, when buying an original Italian product, you need to pay attention to some features.

How to distinguish a fake?

  1. If you want to buy real Lavazza, you need to go to a specialized store.
  2. Pay attention to the integrity of the packaging so that there are no strong dents or breaks.
  3. Each package must have a certain valve through which carbon dioxide escapes.
  4. Pay attention to the date of manufacture and country of origin.
  5. All grains in the package must be the same size and whole.

The Lavazza brand has a rich assortment, so every lover of an invigorating drink will choose the coffee that suits their taste.

Unfortunately, on the shelves you can often find not original Italian coffee, but low-quality counterfeit coffee. To avoid wasting your money, you should pay attention to the following aspects when purchasing:

  • It is best to purchase coffee in a specialty store, even if the prices there are slightly higher than in the supermarket.
  • Vacuum packaging of coffee must be absolutely flat, without bends or creases.
  • Look carefully at the packaging: the date of manufacture must be on the side, and the information must indicate the country of origin of the coffee beans.
  • The packaging must have a special valve for the release of carbon dioxide. It must have a cut along the edges or in the middle.
  • Coffee beans should be approximately the same size, even in shape, and whole.

This drink brings unforgettable pleasure. Make your choice: Lavazza coffee beans or ground. In any case, this drink will pleasantly delight you with its taste and aroma. It will make your morning invigorating and your meeting over a cup of coffee unforgettable!

For making espresso, the following Lavazza varieties are better suited:

  • Qualita Oro;
  • Grand Espresso;
  • Espresso;
  • Gran Riserva;
  • Qualita Rossa.

Without harm to health

Not everyone can drink drinks containing caffeine for health reasons. As a rule, they are contraindicated in the presence of pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system. Neglecting medical recommendations can cause significant harm to your health. But you don’t have to completely give up coffee. You just need to choose the right variety of Lavazza.

Decaffeinatto in this case will be a real find. It contains Arabica and Robusta beans processed using special technology. The caffeine content in them is reduced to almost zero. At the same time, the taste and aroma remain exactly the same as when using the classic version.

How to choose the right coffee

Before you throw the first pack of beans you come across into your cart, we recommend stopping for a second and thinking about what kind of coffee you actually like and how you prefer to prepare it. Choosing coffee is a responsible matter; you then drink it and prepare it for your loved ones. It will be a shame if the money spent brings neither benefit nor pleasure from the drink.

So, what should you pay attention to?

Arabica or blend

Single-varietal Arabica is an ideal choice for those who know exactly what they want and are familiar with the taste of coffee from different countries of the world. Single varieties are represented in the mass market, but not very widely. If you want to choose a specific Arabica that grows in a specific country (for example, Sumatra, Maragogyp, or especially Jamaica Blue Mountain), you should go to a specialized online store.

A mixture of different varieties of Arabica is very popular among producers. Usually, from 2 to 5 different varieties are mixed, achieving an even, stable taste (as a rule, the manufacturer keeps his blend a secret). This allows you to reduce the cost of coffee without losing taste or adding bitterness. If you want a mild taste and aroma, choose this blend.

However, 100 percent Arabica in the composition does not always guarantee the quality of coffee: sometimes good Robusta in a mixture gives a much better taste and effect than frankly cheap Arabica from Brazil and Vietnam (we wrote about the benefits of Robusta here).

A mixture of Arabica and Robusta is traditionally used for making espresso (Robusta in the composition produces a dense, stable crema), but is also good for drinks with milk. Yes, robusta adds bitterness to drinks. On the other hand, it contains much more caffeine, so it is ideal for those who have difficulty waking up in the morning or need a quality boost during the day. The ratio of Arabica to Robusta in classic blends: 80% to 20% or 70% to 30%.

Roasting degree

The easiest way to “kill” even very good grain is to roast it incorrectly. So pay attention to the degree of roasting.

Light. It is rarely found in the mass market and is considered the best option for making coffee in a pour over or French press. It maximizes the natural qualities of the grain, fruity sourness and light bread notes.

Average. A universal option for both a coffee machine and alternative preparation methods.

Dark roast was once the most popular in Europe. On the one hand, if you don’t like coffee with natural sourness, then this roast is the most suitable. On the other hand, it completely “kills” all shades of taste, leaving only a combination of bitterness and caramel sweetness.

Roasting date and shelf life

If we take the issue seriously, the shelf life of freshly roasted coffee in unsealed packaging should not exceed a couple of weeks. But in the case of store-bought coffee, everything is a little different. In large-scale production, the roasted beans are immediately packaged in sealed Ziploc bags, which allows the coffee to retain most of its flavor properties for much longer (up to 12 and 18 months).

Type of packaging

Any decent coffee should have a degassing valve on the packaging (the one that everyone tries to smell the coffee through). The thing is that immediately after roasting the beans continue to emit carbon dioxide, and the valve allows the gas to escape, but does not allow oxygen in.

Pack volume

Ideally, an opened (i.e. no longer sealed) coffee package should be used within 10-14 days. For home use, a pack weighing 150–250 g is suitable for this period (this is if you drink 1–2 cups of coffee a day). For offices, it is better to take a weight of 1000 g.

The best coffee from Lavazza, for me personally, is TopClass. Great chocolate taste and wonderful aroma.

I recently tried Qualita Rossa for the first time in my life and was captivated. This is simply a miracle drink. It not only gives you energy, but also lifts your spirits. Real, high quality coffee.

I am an experienced coffee lover, but after trying Crema e Gusto, I can’t drink any other coffee. Nothing can spoil it, even if you don’t know how to brew coffee.

I just love Grand Espresso. After a morning cup of this coffee, I'm ready to move mountains. The main thing is to buy from trusted places so as not to run into a fake. But, in general, the coffee is great!
