History of the brand
Today coffee appeared in our stores not so long ago. The trademark is presented as an English product that is manufactured in Germany. A distinctive feature of the product is the successful combination of experience, skills and abilities accumulated over many years with modern advanced technologies.
Coffee is produced using innovative technologies
The manufacturer of Today instant coffee is the Cafea Gruppe holding centered in Hamburg, and production plants and factories are located in several German cities and in the Belgian Liege. They own half the market for these products.
Jan Bernd Rothfos has been running a profitable business for many years (since 1955).
At that difficult time, the management of the companies producing coffee varieties Jacobs, Tchibo, Eduscho and DEK, by mutual agreement, in order to preserve the market from Nestle and General Foods, divided spheres of influence. The business has gone through many difficult moments, but the company is still operating, and in 2015 there were 1,750 employees with an annual income of 589 million euros.
History of Coffee Today
Cafea Gruppe belongs to the Rothfos family, whose members are sensitive to the deeds of their ancestors. Therefore, the founding date of the company is considered to be 1896, when Johann Dietrich Rothfos opened a store and cafe in the village of St. Magnus, near Bremen. His son, Bernhard Rothfoss, founded DEUTSCHE EXTRAKT KAFFEE (DEK) in 1922 together with several entrepreneurs.
The third generation of the family, Jan Bernd Rothfos, took over the company in 1955, at the age of 29. It was a difficult time when the heads of the four largest German coffee companies (Jacobs, Tchibo, Eduscho and DEK) entered into an agreement and effectively divided the market to prevent Nestle and General Foods from entering it.
In 1965, DEK was the first in Germany to produce freeze-dried coffee (produced using Freeze-Dried vacuum freezing technology). The demand was so great that the coffee literally had to be distributed among wholesale buyers, and in 1969 DEK built a new plant in Berlin.
Jan Bernd Rothfoss
A few years later, the company's shareholders demanded that Herr Rothfoss give them more freedom in managing the company. In response, the company's CEO resigned. Now he recalls that period with a laugh, calling it an interlude that did not last long. Soon, excessive democracy brought the company to the brink of bankruptcy, and the shareholders asked Rotfos to return, at the same time selling him their shares. Since 1982, the company has been owned by the Rothfos family. At the same time, the owner created the KORD Gruppe holding from several problem companies he acquired, the core of which was DEK. In 2007, the holding was renamed Cafea Gruppe.
Nowadays, the Cafea Gruppe holding is still headed by Jan Bernd Rothfos, who has already celebrated his 90th birthday, assisted by his daughter Anna Katrin. In 2015, the holding had 1,750 employees and annual income amounted to 589 million euros.
The company produces high quality coffee, constantly improving production technologies. One of the new products is the In-Fi® technology, which makes it possible to make freeze-dried coffee that differs little in taste and aroma from natural coffee. Each crystal of such coffee contains a grain of ground grain. When freeze-dried coffee is dissolved in water, some grounds settle to the bottom of the cup.
The Today brand is advertised as coffee created according to English traditions; the product motto is: “London is calling you today.” The advertising uses views of the British capital, images of the Queen from the English pound.
There is no doubt that Today is produced using new technologies and in compliance with German quality standards. According to Herr Rothfoss, he dedicated his life to creating wonderful drinks that give people pleasure and save time.
Raw materials and production
One of the most important tasks that the team has to solve in its daily activities is the improvement of production technologies. According to the new technological program, a freeze-dried coffee product is produced, i.e. undergone vacuum-freeze drying. Each coffee crystal contains a grain of ground bean. When dissolved, sublimated, a small amount of grounds precipitates.
Thoughtful technology down to the smallest detail allows you to preserve the original taste of coffee
Characteristic is the fact that “Tudey” is produced using new technologies, but with strict adherence to German high quality criteria. The organizer of this business is confident that great drinks give people moments of pleasure while saving time.
New cooking technology makes it possible to preserve healthy and natural qualities and a specific aroma. The technological process includes careful selection of green fruits, which are then fried in a hot oven. After roasting, the grains are kept in order to rid them of carbon dioxide released during the working process.
Coffee concentrate is made from roasted beans
The next production step is grinding the grains and boiling the mixture for two hours in an airtight container. The resulting concentrate must be frozen and then crushed into pellets. Finally, drying is carried out in a vacuum. Transformation of grains preserves the bright aroma, excellent taste and usefulness of the components. Of course, energy costs for manufacturing products are included in the cost of the product.
The taste and aroma of Tudey products directly depend on the ecology of the regions in which the raw materials were grown.
Coffee assortment Today
In nature, there is an interdependence between the properties of the soil and the taste of the vegetation grown on this soil. Coffee is a type of plant that responds to light, moisture in the nutrient layer of the earth, the composition of the soil, and neighboring plants. For this reason, there is a difference between fruits collected, for example, in Africa and Indian fruits. The Brazilian variety has a sour taste, the Colombian also has this taste. Indian beans are bitter and spicy in taste, coffee trees from Yemen bear fruits with a chocolate tint, even sometimes with a wine aroma. The raw material grown in Cuba has a strong aroma.
Each individual type of Today coffee has a different taste and aroma.
An appetizing and aromatic drink is made from grains grown in Ethiopia and Kenya. These suppliers give the food market products with a plus sign.
Coffee Today is a universally recognized brand and its kit includes:
- freeze-dried instant coffee;
- ground, contained in soluble;

The recipe is simple: place 1-2 tsp in a cup. coffee mass and fill it with hot water, but not boiling water.
