Features of portable devices

Coffee makers for cars operate on the principle of standard electrical appliances for brewing coffee. Only the power source has been changed, because unlike the usual ones, the road model runs from the cigarette lighter .
A car cigarette lighter is characterized by low power, so the device for preparing a flavored drink in a car works slower than in a home kitchen . Power – no more than 200 W, however, this does not affect the cooking speed.

The volume of the tank may vary between models, but even the smallest one will be enough to get 50 ml of rich black coffee .

Attention! The coffee machine has a minimalistic design and has no unnecessary parts. The design is compact and stable.

How to choose?

When choosing a car coffee maker, you need to take the following points into account::

  • tank volume - the device can be designed for one or eight servings of drink. For a passenger car, there is no point in choosing a device for preparing large quantities of coffee.
  • voltage - a 12 V device is suitable for the driver of a passenger car, and a 24 V product will help the owner of a truck or bus to brew coffee.
  • the material from which the body is made - the structure must be durable and made of high-quality material.
  • availability of additional options – not all models are equipped with an automatic shut-off function, but for convenient use it is better to purchase a coffee maker with advanced functionality.
  • reliability and safety - the water container should have a sealed lid with a small hole for filling the device with coffee, so that the drink does not spill during movement.

Types

There are two types of car coffee makers: drip and espresso . Each device has its own distinctive features, advantages and disadvantages, knowing which you can easily choose the most suitable device for your vehicle.

Drip

Drip or filtration devices practically do not differ from standard drip-type devices, but are smaller in size, making them convenient to place in a car .
An important element of a drip coffee maker is a paper, nylon or “gold” filter, which is filled with coffee powder. A paper filter is required to prepare one serving of the drink .

After cooking, this device will have to be thrown away immediately, which is not very convenient, since you always need to have spare filters with you. A nylon filter is suitable for reusable use - after brewing coffee, it can be washed and reused.

The “golden” filter is made of fibers coated with titanium nitride - it is durable, does not affect the taste of the drink and is easy to clean, but it is rarely on sale.

Note! Due to its low power, heated water slowly passes through the coffee, filling it with all the flavor and aroma properties of natural crushed beans. The result is a very rich and strong drink.

Operating principle

The device works according to this principle:

  1. Water is poured into the reservoir.
  2. Ground coffee is placed in a separate compartment.
  3. The coffee maker is connected to the cigarette lighter.
  4. The liquid begins to move through the tube to the heater, reaching 90-95 degrees.
  5. The water passes through the coffee powder and is discharged out, after which the finished coffee can be consumed.

Advantages

  • The device brews strong and aromatic coffee;
  • reliability of design;
  • simple controls;
  • light weight;
  • optimal tank volume;
  • ergonomic design;
  • compactness;
  • large range of models;
  • price.

Flaws

  • you need to dispose of coffee grounds;
  • the need to regularly replace filters;
  • you need to use bottled water.

average cost

A reliable drip coffee maker for preparing a coffee drink in a passenger car can be purchased for 1,400 rubles . Models for brewing several servings of coffee in trucks are much more expensive - 8,000 rubles.

Popular manufacturers

Well-known manufacturers of car drip coffee makers are:

  • Koolatron is a Canadian company whose product range includes chargers, numerous car accessories, fans and tool kits;
  • Waeco is a German company that produces popular products for motorists.

Espresso

A type of mobile device that allows you to prepare an exquisite drink with thick, creamy foam in 2 minutes.
Espresso coffee makers are made of high-quality ABS plastic - this material does not emit toxic substances, it is absolutely safe for health and does not absorb foreign odors.

To prepare coffee in this device, you can use both ground coffee and pods designed for one serving of drink . Once the coffee is ready, the device will notify the user by sounding a beep.

By the way! The device is small in size and matches the diameter of the cup holder hole, which allows you to store the espresso coffee maker in the glove compartment along with spare pods.

Operating principle

The coffee preparation process is carried out as follows:

  1. Purified water is poured into the container.
  2. The hermetic cover is screwed on and the device is connected to the network.
  3. A pod is installed in a special compartment - a filter bag with compressed ground coffee.
  4. After pressing the power button, water heated under steam pressure seeps through the coffee.
  5. After passing through the coffee, the finished drink is poured into a cup.

Advantages

  • quick espresso preparation;
  • automatic shutdown function;
  • low consumption of ground coffee;
  • the presence of creamy foam in the finished drink;
  • durable body;
  • pleasant appearance;
  • easy maintenance of the device;
  • compact design;
  • almost silent operation.

Flaws

  • many models can make just one cup of coffee;
  • It is necessary to use only purified water;
  • additional costs for purchasing pods;
  • high price.

average cost

Portable car espresso coffee makers are several times more expensive than drip models. The average cost of such a device is 12,000 rubles .

— You can store espresso capsules, sugar and even milk pods in the bag. You also have 2 cups and a small basket inside the set to dispose of used capsules.

— If the water level indicator remains white after filling, check the mineral content of your water (some waters have very low mineral content and the machine cannot detect the water level).

Portable coffee maker HiBREW H004

Hi all! I love coffee and have long been looking for something small and convenient that I could take on a car trip. I didn’t like what I came across earlier because they were mostly coffee makers for ground coffee, which did not heat water and had a manual pump. All this is inconvenient. Yes, there are electric ones like mini-pressos, but they don’t heat the water either. I also found such a link, but there the price is twice as high and less universal. Before Black Friday, I decided to check if something more convenient had appeared for reasonable money and found the device in question. I liked the coffee maker. Under the cut, we measure the weight of the water being poured and the resulting drink, measure the temperature of the resulting drink and, of course, try it. The coffee maker arrived in Moscow in 5 days, securely packaged. Main characteristics Weight 600 g. water tank capacity 60 ml. pressure 15 bar power 80 W Rated voltage 12 V. (without heating water it is possible to use 5 V from the USB port) size 70 * 240 mm compatible with Nespresso, Dolce Gusto capsules, ground coffee beans. The advantages of this coffee maker are that it heats water, is compatible with Nespresso and Dolce Gusto capsules, and it is also possible to use ground coffee. When purchasing, you can choose 3 configuration options.

1. Coffee maker + 12v car adapter 2. Coffee maker + 12v car adapter + 220v adapter + usb cable 3. Coffee maker + 12v car adapter + 220v adapter + usb cable + case for carrying and storage. Also included is a cup, a container for ground coffee, a measuring spoon and instructions (English available, no Russian)

I chose the third option with a carrying case.

Additional Information

Equipment

It works very simply. insert the capsule into the adapter (the adapters are different for Nespresso and Dolce Gusto) or pour ground coffee into the container and insert the container into the adapter.

screw the adapter to the coffee maker. We put the cup from the kit on the adapter from below. Pour water into the upper container of the coffee maker to the mark and close the lid.

We press the button and wait for the drink to be prepared.

There is such a nuance that the coffee maker heats water only from 220/230V and from a 12V car network. From USB it only pumps water and accordingly you need to pour boiling water. In one case, the cooking time was 6 minutes from 220V, 7 minutes. from 12V. When powered by USB, press the button for 2-3 seconds and the pump starts working immediately. Cooking time will be about 30 seconds.

Making espresso from capsules

At my own peril and risk, I poured water just above the mark line - 73.1 g. Temperature 25 degrees.

It turns out 58 g. drink (cup weight 100 g). Some of the water remains in the capsule and a little in the water container

temperature of the resulting drink from the capsule

Used capsule

We make espresso from ground coffee. Having compacted it well, I was able to pour only 5.7 grams into the container. ground coffee (ground for espresso using a burr grinder).

Ground coffee drink temperature

The yield of the drink from the ground turned out to be almost the same as from the capsules. As for the taste, I liked coffee from capsules more than from ground coffee, as its taste was more intense. Here it was probably necessary to take capsules not for lungo, but for espresso for a more fair comparison, but there were no others at hand.

Among the shortcomings for me, perhaps, is that the volume of the drink is only 60 ml. I wanted more.

Thank you for your attention.

PS I found an interesting coffee machine from this manufacturer that accepts Nespresso, Dolce Gusto capsules, ESE pods and ground coffee!

Useful video

From this video you will learn how one of the car coffee maker models works:

A car coffee maker will become a faithful companion for every traveler and motorist, because it is indispensable not only on the road, but also on picnics, hunting or fishing .

Experts recommend that truck owners choose drip-type devices - they are capable of preparing an excellent drink, are easy to operate and are inexpensive. For lovers of delicious coffee who drive a car, an espresso coffee maker, characterized by its small size and ease of use, will be more suitable.

Impressions and experience of using the Handpresso portable manual coffee maker

Inspired by the posts of lapis2002 and Semyon’s “enthusiasm” about coffee topics in blogs on the IT portal, I decided to describe my impressions and experience of using an interesting coffee gadget - the Handpresso manual espresso coffee maker with ground coffee. The coffee maker works on the principle of a pump, you need to manually pump up the pressure, then pour hot water into the corresponding compartment, place the holder with coffee on top, close it, turn it over and press the lever. A dose of espresso is approximately 30 milliliters.

The first question is why do I need this strange thing? Due to my line of work, for the last 2-3 years, I have been traveling non-stop and, since I can’t imagine life without coffee, a portable coffee maker was simply necessary. Coffee from geyser coffee makers or Turkish coffee makers is not exactly the coffee I like, so the choice fell on an interesting product from the French company Handpresso SAS, which just recently appeared on the Dom Coffee chain. At that time there were only 2 models: one with ground coffee and one with coffee tablets, since the tablets seemed something strange and the girl consultants were always saying bad things about them, the choice was made in favor of the model with ground coffee (which I later regretted ). Having tasted the capabilities of the coffee maker before purchasing, I was pleased with the taste of the drink. A geek wouldn’t be a geek if he didn’t immediately buy all sorts of accessories for his new gadget, such as a set of unbreakable cups, a travel case, and additional coffee holders...

Underwater rocks. I regretted choosing a model with ground coffee for the reason that guessing the grind for this baby is a real pain. In each new city, I had to go through trial and error, since the same staff of coffee shops were often familiar with this machine only in theory, and on their coffee grinders there are no numbers indicating the degree of grinding. Incorrect grinding can result in either a negligible extraction time for the drink (according to various opinions, ideally it should be about 25 seconds), or, on the contrary, too long, which has a detrimental effect on the taste of the coffee, which in such cases cannot even be called espresso. The ideal grind, of course, exists, but achieving it is not easy, so you have to grind coffee in small doses and, after home tasting, return to the store again and again, fortunately this service is free.

My typical coffee algorithm during business trips looks like this: we take a little milk, heat it in the microwave, then whip it with a manual “cappuccino maker”, at the same time heat the water, put the coffee in the holder and pump up the pressure of the coffee maker. Then extract the drink and add milk foam to taste. About five minutes to do everything. It’s probably impossible to call the resulting espresso a reference, but as a portable alternative to Turks and geyser coffee makers, it’s quite a worthy option. Moreover, hybrid models are now being produced simultaneously with ground coffee and tablets. I’m also very impressed by the semblance of community among the guys on the site, where people share photos using Handpresso in different parts of the world under all sorts of interesting circumstances.

To summarize, I will say that the Hanpresso portable manual coffee maker is an interesting and useful gadget that is simply irreplaceable for coffee lovers who lead a nomadic lifestyle and simply lovers of unusual things. The only advice is to give preference to a hybrid modification or a model with coffee “tablets”. This will allow you to eliminate the hassle of finding the perfect grind for the perfect drink and enjoy the same delicious shot of espresso every time!

A visual aid to using Handpresso

PS Coffee and IT are true friends, perhaps best friends, so posts about coffee fit quite naturally into user blogs on an IT resource.
