Coffee has been a popular drink in many countries for many centuries. However, the question of what is the best way to drink coffee, with cream or milk, sweet or without sugar, remains unanswered. Let's tell you about another option for preparing an invigorating drink - coffee with butter.
What is coffee with butter called?
The name was coined by David Asprey, an American entrepreneur and self-proclaimed "bio-hacker" who produces and sells supplements and health products. His brand is called Bulletproof, and under this brand he introduced a coffee-butter drink as a breakfast alternative in 2011.
The idea of mixing a drink and fat is not new: Asprey was inspired by it in Tibet, where he drank a lot of tea with salted milk and yak butter. Only he changed the tea to coffee, removed the milk and salt. The meaning of obtaining energy remains.
As the breakfast drink's popularity has grown among gym fans, the term now applies to any coffee prepared in roughly the same ratio as Asprey's original recipe:
- Brewed coffee – 250–350 ml;
- 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil (now MCT powder);
- 1-2 tablespoons butter from grass-fed cows.
Even with a strong deviation from the recipe, coffee with butter is called Bulletproof in the West, and in the Russian version - “armored coffee” or “keto coffee” (for the keto diet), as well as “butter coffee”.
Butter coffee is a more general concept than “armor” or “keto coffee,” but it goes by many names, so it’s worth keeping in mind. David Asprey promotes his own products, specialty coffees without toxins, specialty oils. We will talk about regular coffee with butter (as well as ghee and coconut).
Who invented armored coffee?
The drink became popular thanks to Dave Asprey, an investor and “biohacker” from Silicon Valley. In 2004, Dave went on a trip to Tibet, where he tried the national drink Chasuymu - tea with butter and yak milk. Returning home, Asprey experimented with the recipe for a long time to achieve the effect of “a hot Frappuccino without milk and sugar.”
In 2009, he achieved the desired taste and effect, posted a 460-calorie coffee recipe on his blog and offered to replace it with breakfast. The recipe is still available for free, but thanks to it, Esprit built an entire “armor-piercing empire” - he launched a whole series of products under the Bulletproof brand.
There are two versions of MCT oil on sale - Brain Octane Oil (contains 8 carbon atoms) and XCT Oil (a combination of 8 and 10 carbon chain triglycerides) for $46 per jar, coffee, bars, dietary supplements.
Since its launch in 2011, sales have increased by 700%. In 2015, a branded Bulletproof Coffee opened in Los Angeles, where you can drink a fatty drink for 6-7 dollars or eat “armor-piercing” ice cream. This year, Asprey received a $19 million investment in a greasy cafe in New York.
However, the idea of fatty drinks itself is not new. Traditional Kalmyk tea is actually armored tea. It is customary to add a piece of butter to coffee in the northern regions of Italy. Many of our Soviet grandmothers added ghee to hot drinks.

Why do you need armored coffee?
It is delicious. This is a quick breakfast that doesn't require you to get up an hour earlier. But if the argument can be considered unconditional benefits, then Bulletproof improves cognitive function (Dave Asprey claims that thanks to the drink he increased his IQ by 20 points), helps to lose weight and lower cholesterol levels. Medium chain fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect. Properly prepared bulletproof coffee helps you enter ketosis faster. MCT oil is very quickly metabolized into ketones, which instantly give you energy and a clear-headed feeling.
Sounds perfect. Are there really no pitfalls?
Despite the energy intensity, it’s not easy to survive until lunch on one armored coffee. For example, Fast Company magazine expert Chris Gayomali drank a cup of armored coffee at 7 a.m. and by 10-11 a.m. he was unbearably hungry until he began supplementing the butter coffee with liquid protein—it helped maintain a feeling of fullness.
Naturopathic doctor Nadia Brito Pateguana calls bulletproof coffee a “treat” and emphasizes that “fats should come primarily from food, not drinks.” “Liquid calories” are one of the main reasons for weight gain on any diet, and although it is not easy to “overeat” on LCHF, some people manage to “overdrink.”
Many people drink coffee in hopes of revving up their metabolism, but consuming too much caffeine increases cortisol, a stress hormone that makes us eat more and causes us to store belly fat.
Therefore, armored coffee should still be considered as an emergency option if you do not have the opportunity to eat a full meal, but have time for a cup of fatty drink, or as a pleasure that you cannot afford every day.
Classic armored coffee recipe
Dave Asprey pays great attention to the quality of the beans - he insists on using special detoxified coffee and produces them under the Bulletproof brand. In fact, for armored coffee you just need good beans - specialty grades.
The original recipe includes organic butter from grass-fed cows (Russian consumers, who can't always count on margarine being slipped in instead of butter, can laugh out loud at this point) and Brain Octane or XCT oil.

Bronecoffee with coconut oil
This recipe can also be considered a classic: coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids, which is what MCT oil is obtained from. Therefore, they can replace the special additives that Dave Asprey’s company offers. But with it, the drink will have a pronounced coconut aroma and taste (which is a plus for many).
The sequence and proportions are the same as the classic recipe, but instead of the special Brain Octane oil, coconut oil is used.
You can use manna instead of oil. The taste will be richer and slightly sweeter. The manna melts more slowly, and if you decide not to blend the drink, the bulletproof will become more coconutty with each sip.
You will need:
- 1.5 teaspoons coffee
- glass of water
- 1 tbsp. l. butter
- 1 tbsp. l. coconut oil
KBJU and calorie content: 412 kcal, 1.3 g protein, 41.3 g fat, 0.33 g carbohydrates
The amount of carbohydrates in the drink will depend on the coconut product. There are none in oil - “oil”, there will be a little in “butter” and a little more in manna.
Bronekoffee with melted butter
Ghee is lactose-free and has a delicate, creamy, nutty flavor. It's perfect for roasting and great in coffee.
You will need:
- 1.5 teaspoons coffee
- glass of water
- 1 tbsp. l. coconut oil or manna
- 1 tbsp. l. ghee
STEP ONE AND ONLY
Brew coffee, add butter, beat the mixture with a blender until smooth.
KBJU and calories: 448 kcal, 0.05 g protein, 50 g fat, 0 g carbohydrates (if you use coconut oil).

Bronecoffee recipe with egg
When Chris Gayomali complained to Dave Asprey about being hungry quickly after bulletproofing, the father of armored coffee advised him to add a raw egg to the drink. Chris is hesitant, but you can try.
If the coagulated protein in your drink doesn't excite your appetite, use it to make a cream.
You will need:
- 1.5 teaspoons coffee
- glass of water
- egg
- erythritol to taste
STEP 1
Separate the yolk from the white. Prepare your coffee the way you like. Add 1-2 tbsp. l. butter and 1-2 tbsp. l. coconut oil or manna.
STEP 2
Beat the yolk well. If desired, you can add 1-2 tsp. erythritol, ground into powder. Add the yolk to your coffee. Use a blender to obtain a smooth drink.
STEP 3
Beat the whites into a strong foam (to do this, add a pinch of salt or cream of tartar and beat in a cold bowl). Add sweetener to taste.
After all the steps, the drink will be warm, but not hot, and it’s better to drink it right away - cold coffee with eggs is not for everyone.
You can do without the protein by adding only the yolk. The protein can be used to prepare kozinaki.
Coffee with yolk is delicious to prepare without butter, but with cream. It also turns out interesting if you add a pinch of chili pepper.
KBJU and calorie content (based on one tablespoon of oil in the drink): 482 kcal, 9 g of proteins, 47.3 g of fat, 0.75 g of carbohydrates.
If you want to try egg coffee before experimenting, feel free to order it at a café, even when it's not listed on the menu. It is easier to order coffee with yolk for testing than with butter.

Taste of coffee with butter
Many people are afraid to try the drink just because they are embarrassed by the feeling of fat. Some people remember being given hot milk and butter as children, while others believe that the taste of fat will be in their mouths. Think about not being bothered by hot, fatty broth, which is essentially the same thing.
Those who have tried this drink note a pleasant, smooth, creamy taste. It's like a smooth, thick, creamy latte, users say. The oiliness becomes a plus, it gives a velvety feel, the drink is closest to coffee with milk or cream, but without milk.
As one user advised: if the greasy sheen on the surface bothers you, don’t look at it, just take the first sip. It will taste good!
Beneficial properties of coffee with butter
For people on a keto diet, coffee with butter is a necessary part of the diet, since fat loss occurs precisely due to eating fat. But you don’t have to be on a diet to appreciate all the benefits and benefits of coffee with butter:
For those who don't have breakfast in the morning
Millions of people, sleepy, cannot bring themselves to have breakfast, and are only able to drink a cup of their favorite espresso or Americano. Everyone knows that this is not good for the stomach, but there is no strength to chew. The appetite wakes up after a couple of hours, at work or school. Take out the blender in the evening, and in the morning, in half a minute, beat coffee with butter, butter, peanut or coconut. Your stomach will thank you!
For those who go to training
If you run or jump at the gym to lose weight, this may not be an option for you (although we will discuss this later). But if you want to gain weight, pump up muscles, or basically train more intensely and longer, this drink is what you need! You will have a lot of energy, and at the same time lightness in your stomach - after all, you haven’t eaten anything. You will be able to do more repetitions, which will have an effect on the muscles.
To improve cognitive abilities
This, however, is not about butter, but about MCT oil (in Russian, MCTs are medium chain triglycerides), this is one of the forms of saturated fatty acid. In studies conducted on people taking MCT, cognitive function improved along with brain function. MCT oil can be bought on iHerb, but the closest thing to it is coconut oil, which is sold in eco-stores and even large supermarkets. In general, coconut oil added to coffee will improve your brain function.
So simple, really tasty and healthy. Better than adding cream and sugar to your morning drink.
Benefits of coffee
Nothing wakes you up in the morning better than a cup of aromatic black fuel. But you should not drink it on an empty stomach, if you feel unwell, have a gastrointestinal disorder or disease, heart disease or cardiovascular disease.
The US National Institutes of Health conducted a number of studies, according to which the beneficial effects of coffee on the body in moderate quantities were noted:
- improves concentration;
- reduces the risk of gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease;
- has a tonic effect on the body.
Cons of coffee with butter
The drink has no direct negative properties, except perhaps its rather high calorie content. And if you are used to drinking a coffee drink with a hearty breakfast or lunch, you may end up with a serious calorie excess. Be smart and count calories if that's an issue.
It seems surprising that with such a high calorie content, many people use butter coffee to lose weight, but it is true.
Coffee with butter for weight loss
The keto diet uses a combination of cow butter and MCT oil (optionally coconut oil). In principle, you can lose weight with butter, if you count calories, and use this product not as an additive to the diet, but as a substitute.
Here's how it works:
A cup of coffee with butter can replace breakfast and prolong the feeling of fullness for several hours. Most people are quite capable of holding out until lunch without snacking, and even eating very little healthy food at lunch, and not feeling hungry.
Consuming MCT oils in the morning will help stabilize your blood sugar and increase ketone production. That is, the drink can boost your metabolism and at the same time help your body go into fat-burning mode.
History of the drink
Armored coffee is considered the most popular in Silicon Valley. Many celebrities talk about how great it is to fuel up early in the morning with doses of the right fats and caffeine.
This type of coffee is derived from a classic Tibetan drink. Many cafes in America make it. The drink is not yet popular in our country, but you can make it yourself. “Armour-piercing” coffee helps speed up metabolism and promotes weight loss with constant use.
The drink is considered unique; it has its own history. It was first developed by Dave Asprey: a businessman, entrepreneur and programmer living in Silicon Valley.
When Dave was traveling in Tibet, he took a break from the road in one of the houses of a local resident, who treated the entrepreneur to an unusual drink made from coffee with the addition of yak milk butter. After the guest drank the drink, he felt a significant influx of energy and strength.
Upon returning home, Dave conducted experiments and tried to create the wonderful energy armored coffee again. He mixed hot coffee with healthy fats: butter or coconut oil.
After some time, Asprey noticed that such a drink with oil increased his energy, efficiency, and also restored his blood sugar levels. The programmer gave the coffee recipe to his employees. Drinking quickly became popular. Since then, the use of this drink has only increased, and the author of the recipe has crowned the triumph of the business selling the drink.
What oil can be added to coffee?
This drink is prepared only from sufficiently fatty oil, and in solid form. Do not make coffee with vegetable or olive oil; it will definitely be too greasy and tasteless.
- Coffee with butter is the most affordable option in terms of energy. Well, if you can’t bring yourself to have breakfast, but you understand that it is necessary. You can try eco-oil or look for New Zealand (herbal) oil in large hypermarkets, but you can start with regular oil. If only it wasn't a spread and had more fat.
- Coconut oil in coffee for weight loss is the best option as it will not only bring in the right fats but will also stimulate your metabolism, resulting in you being more energetic and able to shed those extra pounds faster. This product is often quite expensive, so it is mixed half and half with cream, but can also be consumed separately.
- Coffee with peanut butter even has its own name - “Snickers”, and many people also drink it. Unless you want a homogeneous, smooth product, and experiment with flavors. Often this pasta is salty, which is not suitable for everyone, and sugar may also be added, which will negate the idea of losing weight.
- Coffee with ghee (ghee) is very popular among followers of a healthy lifestyle. This ghee for coffee is easy to prepare at home from cow butter. There are many detailed instructions on the Internet. The result is a valuable product, purified and beneficial to the body. By the way, you can add spices to it during cooking if you wish.
Try different options, and among them you will definitely find your own, which suits your taste and properties, depending on your purpose.
Potential harms of coffee with butter
It's important to note that coffee with butter is not a balanced way to start your day.
Replacing a nutrient-dense breakfast with this drink displaces many important nutrients. Additionally, drinking this drink in addition to a typical breakfast likely adds a significant amount of unnecessary calories.
Considering that all the calories in the drink come from fat, you're missing out on other health-promoting nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
A two-egg omelette with spinach and a 1-ounce serving of oatmeal with flaxseed and berries are more nutritious meals that will benefit your energy and health more than a serving of coffee with butter.
The large amount of fat in this drink can also cause stomach discomfort and other gastrointestinal problems such as bloating and diarrhea, especially if you are not used to consuming large amounts of fat.
In addition, coffee with butter contains a significant amount of cholesterol. Fortunately, dietary cholesterol does not greatly affect cholesterol levels in most people (26).
However, approximately 25% of people are considered cholesterol hyperresponders—meaning that foods high in cholesterol significantly increase blood cholesterol levels (26, 27, 28).
People who are hypersensitive to cholesterol should avoid coffee with butter.
Summary:
By drinking buttery coffee instead of a balanced, nutritious breakfast, you're missing out on many important nutrients like protein and fiber. This drink is also high in fat, which may cause side effects such as diarrhea in some people.
Butter coffee recipe
There are no strict canons here, and you won’t have to measure anything by grams and milliliters, which is good. In the morning, you can pour the ingredients into a blender or cup, at least in approximate proportions, and you will get the effect.
Approximate standard proportions: for 150 ml of coffee - a heaped tablespoon of oil. But you can start with a teaspoon.
Within this ratio, you can blend oils, and even add different spices, such as vanilla or cinnamon, directly into your drink.
How to cook:
- Brew coffee in a Turk, geyser, French press, or brew it in a filter (you can make an Americano from espresso), but don’t cook more than double espresso, it’s too strong.
- Blend the coffee, butter and spices in a blender until the texture is smooth.
- Taste it.
Some people don't whisk, but simply stir the butter in a cup. You can try it this way, but it won't taste like a creamy latte. However, there will be benefits.
How to cook?
If you follow the recipe, coffee with coconut oil should contain the following ingredients:
- Ground coffee beans. It will take 10 g.
- Water (100 ml).
- Coconut oil (20 g).
First of all, espresso coffee is prepared. For this purpose, use a Turk or coffee machine. After the foam rises, the container must be removed from the heat. The contents of the Turks are poured into a cup, seasoned with the required amount of coconut oil and mixed thoroughly. If your body accepts this drink without problems, then the amount of coconut oil can be increased from 20 to 80 g.
Reviews of coffee with butter
The popularity of the drink online is simply impressive! Some negative “it doesn’t taste good” are drowned in thousands of praise reviews about coffee with oil for weight loss. The energy cocktail is already served in many establishments in Moscow, but all over the world it is a real boom, associated, however, with the keto diet. This “new way to drink coffee” has taken Silicon Valley by storm (they say it improves IQ and concentration). In general, there is enough delight. Therefore, if you are planning to try it, it is definitely worth doing so to at least be aware of the new trend.
Harm from coffee as payback for a brief moment of stimulation
A psychostimulant, popular all over the world, which increases physical and mental activity, gives daily vigor and good mood. Exceeding the dose can provoke euphoric intoxication and poisoning.
The tissues of the human body contain special receptors for adenosine, which, when it appears in cells, indicates fatigue. The caffeine molecule blocks natural receptor signals, masking fatigue and drowsiness. Adenosine continues to accumulate, causing the negative effects of caffeine - fatigue.
The production of adenosine helps protect the central nervous system from overstrain, and uncontrolled coffee consumption can cause psychomotor exhaustion.
With prolonged consumption of coffee in excess of the norm, dopamine receptors reduce sensitivity, so addiction appears and the body requires additional stimulation.
If there is inflammation in the body, coffee increases its level. Another negative effect of classic coffee on the body when consumed in excess is the deterioration of the absorption of beneficial minerals and metals from food.
Coffee and milk drinks affect the body in the same way as American drinks, only they contain additional substances.
It is a mistake to believe that milk “dilutes” the composition of coffee and its chemical composition changes. If you add sugar to the drink, then the benefits of consuming coffee, even in moderate amounts, are replaced by harm.
Let's sum it up
Adding butter to coffee is interesting and useful. It's part of the keto diet, but many people simply enjoy starting the day with this nutritious drink that will keep them energized for at least a few hours. Reviews about coffee with butter and coconut oil for weight loss are really good. Tastes like a velvety creamy latte, no greasy taste in your mouth. Remember about the calorie content, be moderate, but one serving in the morning will definitely only bring a positive effect, so it’s worth a try!
